We just lost a goat to what I suspect was systemic staph.
It started off with staphylococcus dermatitis on her udder. It was pretty bad, and we had her on a 10 day course of injectable antibiotics before we felt that it was under control. Her last dose was on Sunday. This morning she had developed raging mastitis. I used an intra-mammary antibiotic treatment that the vet had recommended to me for a previous case of mastitis in another goat, but I held off on anything injectable until after I'd spoken to the vet because I wanted their opinion as to whether it may be an antibiotic resistant staph and that's why the mastitis came on so strong when the injectables were done.
I did not take Thyone in to the vet, I just stopped off to chat with them. The vet recommended that I continue with the intra-mammary treatment but didn't think that a stronger drug was necessary. When I got home Thyone was down and very obviously not going to make it. She was gone within half an hour.
I really do think that the antibiotic treatment we'd been giving her had just been barely keeping the staph under control and when we stopped it just went rampant and took her down fast.

:( So hard. Hugs!
I'm so sorry for your loss. We just lost a dear goat the night before Easter so my thoughts are with you. Its such a hard thing. My prayers are with you...
So sorry for your loss! When I had my la mancha necropsied in January, they found staph and strep in her udder, which they said could have killed her, so your feelings about the staph infection could be right. One thing I've had numerous vets and doctors tell me over the years is that if an antibiotic isn't working after a few days, it isn't going to work, so you should switch to something else.
Your dog sounds awesome! Hugs!!!
When I first got home I noticed one of our Great Pyrenees, Gambit, in the goat pen. I know how she got in, but it was still odd for her to be in there. She headed into the barn when she saw me pull up and was still in there when I went to check on Thyone. She wouldn't leave until Thyone had passed. Animals are amazing.
Oh Marin, I am so sorry. This is a horrible thing to have to go through. Bless you and your herd. May God protect everyone else. *BIG HUGS*
