Urine Scald

Hey all,

Don't forget to keep an eye on your bucks for urine scald.  Our Shamrock has a rather nasty case that's flared up within the last few days.  Today we had to warm a room in the barn with a space heater and heat lamp, wash him up, trim away some nasty hair, and put bag balm on the bad spots.  The backs of his front legs have some large hairless areas.  Has anyone else dealt with a bad case of this?

I'd rather prevent it than have to treat it, if I knew how...I felt like a bad goat mama today. :(

  • My guy got it on the side of his face.   I just scrubbed it good and treated it with a medicated cream I had.  I probably should have used zinc oxide.  Anyway put the cream on every few days for a week or so -so the urine wouldn't stick and it is doing fine - growing new hair.    I think I will recheck his legs tomorrow.   They were fine last I looked but could have changed.   I have been washing his face about once a week - he likes it.

  • That's true, Melissa.  It does work and is pretty much the same.  The real difference is in the thickness and water proof ability of the homemade version.  Mixing zinc oxide with pure lanolin is THICK!  It has to be warmed in the hands to apply, and it stays on for probably four days at least in our cold MN weather.  I love not having to apply it often.  But essentially, you're right.  Desitin is handy, easy to find and works too.

I know people like to use natural products - but dont forget - Desitin for diaper rash is for just that - urine scald.  the active ingredient is zinc oxide. :)

  • LOL!  I wish a man to man talk would do the trick! :)  Thanks for the zinc oxide and lanolin idea.  I bet that would help a lot.  I'm going to try that as soon as I can get the zinc oxide.

Poor baby! I haven't had one that bad, but you can't blame yourself. Perhaps a male member of your family could have a man-to-man talk with him? :) Maybe after washing him up, you could make your own diaper rash cream with lanolin and zinc oxide? (Just search online for "buy zinc oxide" and you'll find plenty of sources.) That would protect his skin for a day or two. Keeping him as far away from the girls is the only real solution I can think of. I know they always seem to think they need to pee on themselves when they see a pretty girl.
