My wife and I visited Whole Foods market and picked up some goat milk, and goat milk cheese. I was pleasantly surprised! It was much thicker than what I'm used to since I currently drink skim milk, but It reassured me that when we move, we'll be able to raise our own milk animals with little issue of taste! I do have a question though. I've always heard that store bought is not nearly as good as fresh.. I'm wondering if there's really a considerable difference between store bought and fresh. What's your experience with store vs fresh goats milk?

I was pleasantly surprised at the taste of ND milk. ^^ agreed it was like drinking half and half. I also tried my hand at making soft cheese - my cloth wasnt the right kind - so it was kind of like smooth cottage cheese - wet. But it was easy enough and tasted awesome!
If you purchased it at a Whole Foods Market, maybe it was from a local goat dairy. It may not have been Nigerian milk. I have tasted milk from other goats (Nubian, Mini-Nubian, Oberhasli, Kinder, Toggenberg, Alpine, LaMancha and Saanen) and except for the Oberhasli, it always had a slight aftertaste or worse, but with the Nigerians, no matter how hard I try, I can't taste any goaty flavor. =)
Also, I have had store bought goat milk and it was horrible. It came in a can, I think. I threw it away it was so bad.
I think you will be very pleasantly surprised when you taste Nigerian Dwarf milk.
Thanks for the responses! There was a slight aftertaste that I didn't love, but overall it wasn't a bad experience. I'm happy to hear fresh is only better!
I absolutely agree! I can't stand store bought. When I tried Debrorah's milk I was shocked that it tasted like regular milk and not like I was drinking a goat! lol!

HOLY COW (er... GOAT) There is a HUGE difference HUGE. If I had stopped at tasting only store bought goat's milk, I would NOT own goats right now. NO WAY. It was absolutely GROSS. If you've ever smelled a buck, THAT is the flavor mixed into the milk. Luckily, I think Deborah told me that she has heard store bought isn't a good example, and encouraged me to try some fresh. I tried some of the milk and cheese the gal I buy my goats from had, and I was HOOKED. Literally craving it for days later. I think FRESH goat milk tastes better than cow's milk.
I have had similar experiences to Rachel. They for sure do something wrong with the store stuff....it could be a combination of things. I really don't know. They may add warm milk to cold milk, take too long to cool the milk, keep bucks to close to does, or it may be as Deborah said in another thread that a commercial dairy does not clean the udders or the teats (discarding the first few squirts of milk from each teat). Any one or combination of these could be the issue with store-bought goats milk. I think that may be part of the reason people say "eeeew" when they find out I milk my goats.

If you let it sit for a few days and skim the cream off the top it won't be so rich. I made the rookie mistake of putting whole goat milk on my cereal for breakfast and it was like having cereal with half and half.
I've never had store-bought goat milk. However, when people try our fresh goat milk or cheese, they always say it tastes better than store-bought. No one has ever said the opposite, so if you like store-bought, you should like it fresh.
