Tattoos and Herd Names?

I just realized I hyjacked a different thread with Q about my tattoo and herd, so I'm moving it here because I have more... lol

What I need help with, is a HERD NAME!!

I have been calling our farm Cracked Egg Farm... because we're all slightly cracked here... and we all love joking around (and cracking up) and I sell eggs. lol I like the name. I have a logo for it. HOWEVER.

I also like Pretzel Farm. When my hubby was growing up, kids called him Pretzel instead of Whetzel. When I started working in the local school, I asked the kids to call me Mrs. Pretzel because the school wants the kids to call teachers Mrs or Mr but to me, that feels so formal, and I liked the lighthearted feel of being called Mrs. Pretzel. The kids like it too, and they call me that most days. It's also evolved now, to where most of my boy's friends (and a lot of the students at school) call me Momma Pretzel now.

OR should I just use my last name? Whetzel's blah blah blah?

I looked in the ADGA herd registry from 2011, and no one has pretzel OR cracked in their herd names.

Deb, question for YOU:

On the individual ID side of ear tattoos... can you use more than two numbers? I was thinking I could use the idea of a letter (or number?) indicating which buck was the sire so I wouldn't have to hunt down papers?

Here's a run down from the thread I hyjacked on accident...

Deborah, do 'we' decide what year is what letter? For example: This is my first year with babies... so could I use this year as A or is there a schedule regarding the years and their letters that comes from the registries?

The registries say that the year letter is preferred or recommended or something like that, but all three of the registries that register NDs use the same letter for each year, which is helpful. This year is C, and next year will be D. They usually have it in their newsletters and on their websites.

Thank you! I don't know why I am having such a hard time navigating the ADGA membership... I don't know what to name my HERD... I don't understand the naming SYSTEM... (registered names, that is) HELP!!

I understand that they will have my herd name as the start of their names.
So we'll say I'm using
"cracked egg" as my herd name.
But then my registered goats have initials like RS and CP and ND and AD... between the herd name and their herd name. Is that their "personal" ID that I would also be tattooing into their ears?
I *think* it is?

So for example, the goat with AD in her name. That would mean she was born in 2010 and that she was the 4th kid born on to my breeder's herd that year... correct? That makes sense. She IS two, and I got her at the start of kidding season.

How many spaces are allowed for names again?

Also, is my ID# the same or different from my "pin" number? (all Q are re ADGA's membership)

I just googled. I got 30 for the number of spaces allowed for registration, and that includes herd name.
So.
Cracked Egg is 11 spaces. That leaves me with 19 spaces for names, including the individual ID in the middle.
Which means my kid's registered names COULD potentially be:
Cracked Egg CA MiniMe
and
Cracked Egg CB Nutmeg
Did I DO IT right!?!?

You don't have to put any initials in the middle of the registered name. One of my first goats was/is Antiquity Oaks Carmen - period. In my herd, I put a buck identifier in the middle of the name now to help me remember who's the daddy without having to pull out registration papers. That means I have to actually be able to remember the goat's whole registered name, which I can't always. :( When I still had Antiquity Oaks as a herd name, I'd use initials for the buck's identifier, but now that my herd name is AOF, I use an abbreviated name for the sire so that I don't have too many initials in a row because I just think it would be weird to have a goat named AOF PG Agnes Grey. So, instead, I have AOF Peg's Agnes Grey.

The only thing that is required by the registry is that your herd name be the first part of the goat's name -- so, if Cracked Egg is your herd name, all goats' names would start with Cracked Egg, and you'd have 19 letters and spaces left for the rest of the name, which can be whatever you want. Some people name all their goats from this year starting with C to match the tattoo letter, but plenty of people don't do that. I like what you've come up with to include year and birth order in the name. I've never worried about putting a birth year identifier in the name (like first letter of the goat's name) because age isn't that important to me as knowing pedigree when I'm out in the pasture. That's why I use themes to identify doe lines, which is a whole different topic for discussion!

And no, your ID# is not the same as your pin number -- kind of like your bank account number is not the same as the pin for your ATM card.

OK! I think I've got it. I think I found the paperwork to request a PIN which I haven't done yet... might need to register my herd name first? At any rate... I'm so undecided on the herd name... I have half a mind to just use my last name and be done with it! lol
I think your idea of using an initial for bucks is a good one. I might have to use that. Might use the year and a buck ID... I'm using your theme idea for remembering dams... although my herd isn't huge, so that shouldn't be too much for me. lol
Thank you for the info and answers! I really appreciate it!

Although your herd isn't huge ... ten years ago, I just wanted a couple of does to make a little chevre. :)

I feel your pain on the herd name. It took me forever to figure out Antiquity Oaks for the name of our farm, and then when ADGA accepted NDs in 2005, "Antiquity" was already taken as a herd name. It took me three years to come up with something, and then I just sort of gave up and decided to use AOF (Antiquity Oaks Farm).

yep! That's why I decided to get a system going now!! (despite my small herd size) I know how easily this can change into something a lot bigger!! lol I wish there was a way to search and see if my ideas are taken.

  • I hadn't even noticed that. You made me take a second look at my ADGA papers there!

However I did register my herdname with AGS as Glenna said without the space because no matter how short, there always comes a time when it seems you need 1 more space for an awesome name you have picked out, and it gets frustrating.

I too, love CrackedEgg no matter how you do it, but I also love that awesome Pretzel story! Some people can't come up with one good name and you have come up with two. Although, even though it is a long word, I would be so tempted if using the "Pretzel" name to use it with the word Plantation. PretzelPlantation! That is so cute and long! Course people might think you had a pretzel making company or something like that. I have cousins who own a thriving homestead named Partridge Plantation. It was purchased long ago, from an elderly aunt and uncle and is a little farm that has hundreds of school children tour it every year to see the animals and go on hayrides and horserides etc.

As far as stud ID goes I did put it in the names of the ones I bought, via intials between the herdname and goat name. I noticed lots of the big herds are done that way and I do want that identifier. I also realized when looking for goats online that it made things easier on me as a potential buyer, because I can look over the stock from a lot of the farms and I also know who the sire is from the names. Once you get to studying them you realize this and it makes good since for everyone. Therefore my girls have herdname, WC (if their dad is Wild Card), SM (for Suncatcher Moonraker) etc.,then the rest of their names. That way anybody looking at any pedigree in the future who has studied my lines will know those bucks are the sires, grandsires etc. It usually only takes 2 spaces of the name to do this and it works great. I do have a 3 letter one also. Pepe Le Pew is on his daughters papers as PLP.

Glenna, Love that Summer Daze thing you got going there with the Z, that is really cool! I think I might would play off that for some future names of her doelings.

  • That's odd that they wouldn't used mixed case.  Wonder why?  Reminiscent of teletype days (teletype operators typed in all caps).

  • Looking over all my goat's registration papers, I can see that ADGA uses all CAPS for names.

So it would be CRACKEDEGG instead of CrackedEgg lke your papers show.

  • I thought you were, Rachel, and remember the name and logo (very cute!).  It does show that way on the registration.  I'm attaching a copy of Summer's registration since the herd name is one word of two with the caps and her name is two words so it shows it very well.

  • Thanks, Glenna. I've been part of the herd name thread since it started, and even commented with my Cracked Egg name and logo. I don't feel like that name is taking up a lot of space, but I'm not 100% sure I really like it. I like that I could branch out and use Cracked Egg Enterprises as a business name for other things that I make and sell... but I'm still not sold on it. Even with my cute logo. lol

I'm also not sure about using caps to separate out words without spaces. Does it show that way on registration papers when they come back to you?

  • Here are my comments, Rachel, unqualified as they might be. <g>

First - herd name, suggest reading the thread about herd names.  It's a lot of fun to read.

    http://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/your-herdname-your-...

Second, you might consider making your herd name one word with capitals to separate the words.  It can be interesting (limiting) later when it's time to name a new kid and having that extra letter to work with matters.

Here is what I did - VerandaBeach Ginger At VanEden is the name of my baby.  VerandaBeach because her mother belonged to that herd at the time of breeding even though she was born here.  I sort of wanted VanEden in her name.  I talked to someone at AGS and they suggest the "at" placed in there.  The more I thought about it, the better I liked it that way even though I originally wanted her call name at the end of her registered name.  Her registered name describes her perfectly!

Her tattoo is my initials (my herd tattoo) and, because she will be the only kid born here this year, I used only the "C" for her right ear.  Next year, of course, the kids will have "D1" "D2" "D3" etc.  I am hoping the "C" only will not be an issue with AGS as they have rules for this.  I might have to have the "1" added to it.

  • I like Cracked Egg Farm!  It's unique and cute. :)
