Pedigrees confuse me...

So I know a lot of you are pedigree buffs. I got into goats before I had much to do with pedigrees... and with the exception of my buck with Pholia Farm, I don't really REALLY know much about the herd names I have on paper...

Some of the herd names on my paperwork:

Tahoma

Deer Run

Sugar Pine

New Creations  (this is on the sire side of my second buck... and he has Camanna/Tahoma as grand parents)

The CT (this one has Camanna and Deer Run as grand parents.)

Soooo Anyone? I've googled the names, but haven't come up with much.

  • WOW! That was interesting! It is so nice to find people who know SOOO much. That was real sweet of you Mac, to give Rachel all that info. I know she really appreciates it, because I would! I wish I knew a little more about some of my lines. I am thinking of ordering a pedigree as far back as I can get on each of mine just so I don't have to look up so much. It is easier to hold it in my hands. And will make breeding planning easier!

  • Thank you Mac!! That was a lot of good info!! I live in Oregon, and I knew those breeders were located here... in digging around, and trying different search words, I have found a bit here and there that I have pieced into a story... lol I would LOVE Joan's contact information! Thank you!!

I think I have heard that Mary's herd (Deer Run) is no more as well. I can't remember where/why... My breeder *might* have picked up her herd does when she got started... (and Mary was selling her herd to stop breeding) I'll have to look back and see who has those bloodlines to know for sure.

I didn't realize Sugar Pine was in the Rsbg area!! I grew up in the good ol' burg... and live about 40 min south of there now.

Thank you again for all this information! I really appreciate it.

Ok I can tell you a little about the first 3 herd names you listed they are either OR or WA breeders.

The first one you listed  Tahoma is a herd that is still going strong and started when the Nigerians first got going in the mid to late 90's at that time the herd name was Shadow Mountain. She had  to change it when Nigerians were accepted into ADGA  because the Shadow Mountain herd name was taken in ADGA. Her name is Joan Hicks and she is in Graham, WA and no she does not have a web site but she loves to talk Nigerians.

The second one, Deer Run is a herd that I don't believe is breeding any more at least I haven't seen any goats born in the last 2 or 3 years with their herd name. It was a herd in Corvallis, Oregon the breeders name is Mary Jo Weaver.

The third one, Sugar Pine is in the Roseburg area the breeder's name is Tembi Buckingham. She is another one that changed herd names when Nigerians were accepted into ADGA her old herd name was Mountain Quest. I believe she is still breeding some since Anna Brown of  Camanna used a buck in 2012 that Tembi brought in. I know  from what Anna Brown told me a few years ago that she was going to focus  more on the boers then the Nigerians. If you want more info about the Sugar Pine herd and what it is doing now I would contact Anna Brown.

If you would like to know more about the animals in your pedigrees Joan Hicks would be a great resource and she may have seen some of the goats in person.  So if you would be interested in her contact information let me know.

This doe is an example of the Deer Run/Camanna breedings that I have found... and her great grandfather, AGS Tahoma Western Legend is the sire of one of my senior does.

  • Wouldn't it be nice if we could look up a herdname somewhere that would take us to a screen with pics of all goats with names that carried that herdname! Talk about dreaming! Ha!

  • I tried that, but most of the goats I found, had the herds IN their pedigree, and weren't FROM that herd itself. I would be willing to bet it's because those herds aren't on line. The ones I did find do look nice. Thankfully, my breeder knew what SHE was doing, so I've benefited from her purchases, I think. lol

yes, that is why I register with ADGA - that pedigree search is awesome.

I do know - if you dont show - there usually isnt much as to the background of goats. I have found alot googling the name and doing an image search. ^^

  • AAAAhhhh!! lol Gotcha!! Yes, that might be for some of you... They are in a lot of Oregon herd pedigrees, so that's one of the names I recognize because of that, but I don't know anything about them.

Oh no, I didn't mean you wrote it wrong, I meant we thought it sounded familiar because of the Sugar Creek herd...

  • Here's a discussion from 2008 mentioning Anna (of Camanna, I believe) selling some Sugar Pine goats. I *think* that Sugar Pine might have been part of Anna's start up herd? Would make sense as to why I see the names in pedigrees so often. http://www.thegoatspot.net/forum/f193/buy-not-buy-104936/

nope. I copied those names directly from my registration papers. I've seen the name on several pedigrees looking for them... Most of the time in bred with Camanna.
