Lump after vaccination?

I'm new to the group and have learned so much already reading through forum discussions! I have had three ND goats since April--a doe and her two yearlings. That number has increased to 5, as the doe freshened July 2, adding another doeling and buckling to our herd.  I vaccinated the kids two weeks ago with CD&T, and I noticed a small lump a few days ago at the injection site on the doeling. It has grown since then--about an inch in diameter below the skin--and she is starting to lose a bit of hair at the site.  Should I be worried about CL? None if the other goats have shown any sign of this.  This is just the latest in our learning adventures: a retained kid, nutritional deficiencies, parasites internal and external... We could have chosen our first goats better!

  • So glad I found this thread. I was just gonna come here and freak out a little because I thought my goat had CL. She was vaxxed a week and a half ago with a CD&T. Sounds like y'all had/have the same experience.

  • We get some lumps from injections too. What I have started doing is to note the exact injection site in the goat's record. At least then if I see the lump later I will know just what it is.
  • someone told me one time - if there's a lump - then the system is working like it is supposed to. ??  but there isnt always a lump. hum.
  • That's the same advice Dr.s give you when you get vaccines for your kids, and even then they tell you there might be hardness and lumps at the injection site, so I think that's pretty par for the course.

  • I was advised by a long time goat owner to rub the site of injection first, give the injection, then rub the vaccine in afterwards. I used this method when I revaccinated my babies this year and it did seem to help.
  • I vaccinated three ND kids and all three developed this kind of thing at the site of each injection. I asked a friend about it and she said it was fairly normal, next time try to vaccinate in an area that won't be confused with being CL, such as the back of the leg. She says you can do that injection IM instead of Sub Q and that you will be less likely to get that bump. My doeling that I did not sell still has a purplish mark where I did the vaccines (I used the same spot each time for her, or pretty close) and she is now almost six months old.
  • I have read the same thing about the Colorado serum However, I ordered it just because of that - and guess what - lump.

I can tell you that you do get lumps and they stay for a while I have one going on 2yrs and it is the site of her CD&T shot. Now mind you I am a nurse by profession so giving shots is not new to me but I have many lumps on my goats. I was advised by one mentor only to use colorado serum CD&T  as it does not leave knots. The does that have the knots were done using something else.  My girls have been to many shows and no one pays any mind to the knots as they all know what it is from the site of it.
  • All three of ours had lumps on 2 sets of shots, the first set only one goat had a lump... We got babies in April also... So I would probably agree that it is normal.. Good luck :0)
  • Thanks, everyone! That makes me feel better. :)
  • They lump is normal. That is a draw back to giving CDT shots. It will start to shink and the hair will grow back.
