So. Macs and Josh came home from school, and Macs conned me into letting him go out to pet the babies by himself. (he hadn't pet them yesterday, because he didn't know he could go in with them.) Fast forward 10 or so min... Macs comes into the kitchen, and says, "We have two more babies now!?" I think he just didn't realize there were three babies in Ginger's pen, so I say "Yeah! Ginger had three babies!" (thinking to myself: I already TOLD you that, and how unobservant can you BE not to have seen that when you went out to look at them yesterday!?" ) lol Then Macs says, "And there's two more now! So there's five! Two of them are with Lucy! Are they HERS!?" To which I got RUNNING out of the house, because Lucy wasn't due until FRIDAY, so I wasn't ready or even THINKING about babies from her until my friend is here from Wisconsin for her visit. I get out to the goat pen, and there is Lucy under the hoop house! Licking two brand spanking new babies, with Keena (my LGD that I have been TRYING to keep from being left with a birthing goat, because I didn't know what she might do...) HELPING Lucy clean the babies... Lucy making momma noises, and being the BEST new mommy ever! I had no idea, and I've been out in the pen several times today. She didn't seem any different. She had a doeling and a buckling. The doeling has blue eyes like her momma, and the boy has all sorts of beautiful splashy white spots all over. :)

  • That is just too cute!

I forgot, I meant to tell you congratulations about Keena too! I know it must have made you really proud & happy that she did a good job without you there! No better proof of her work ethic than to catch her at it like that! I know that I was so proud of how my shih tzu did with Marley last year that I was just beside myself and thought that perhaps we needed some more like that so we let her have pups shortly after. We had 5 females that survived and allowed the grandbaby Dixie to drag one home with her. All 4 of the others sleep with my goats (eat grain! LOL!) Go figure, I think they think they are goats sometimes!

I had a very good idea that 2 of these would be what I was looking for and sure enough when Karley had her twins almost 3 weeks ago, the 2 I had good hopes for were right there. When that doeling fell out on the ground and Karley did not seem to notice because she was licking on the buck, immediately it was being cleaned up before I could even reach for it, so I just helped wipe it's face and praised my pup telling her she was good. She was so gentle and great & the second sister joined in shortly. You would have thought they had been trained to do this. It was awesome! I am keeping them to help with the kids!  I told Dennis that they could easily, potentially save lives if we are not around! The other 2 paid the baby no attention but wanted to start a fight with each other over some birthing gunk! I am already working on them an adoption. The twins as we call them, look exactly alike and are a pain in the butt! They just aren't good farm dogs. I don't trust them around all the poultry and rabbits I am raising this year!

She has 5 more pups this year and I really hope some more of them work out too! I am going to see about getting her fixed soon, but I am so very happy with my MINI LGDs!

  • Congratulations!! :)  I'm so glad you got a big surprise instead of waiting, and waiting, and waiting... :)  Super cool!

  • I'm feeding her her grains by hand every day twice a day. She's never been mean. Just skittish. I've never forced her to interact because I have been waiting for her to kid and use this time to create a relationship with her. She'll be penned in a much smaller area than normal for at least a week, and then more if she seems to need more time. I need to be able to get her onto the stantion without chasing her, and continue our bonding that way. :)

  • Rachel spend as much time as you can making nice with her, it can change back just as quick! The more she decides she likes you now the better she will be later!

  • Thanks, Deb!! I want to add to the story...

Kidding and "wild" does calming is SUCH a blessing!! If there are any people out there second guessing a wild doeling, JUST WAIT!!

My doe Lucy has NEVER been friendly. Always skittish, and never EVER letting anyone trick her into getting close with treats, etc. Kidding has calmed her tremendously, and she even allows me to handle her udder while I'm in her pen with her. She is still nervous about me touching her, but she's been taking her grain from my hands, and letting me pet her while she eats. :) I'm really tickled with the shift in our relationship, and I just wanted to encourage anyone with an unperson-able doeling. There IS HOPE!!

  • Hej from Sweden!
