diarrhea

Hi,

I've read some discussions on diarrhea but none quite fit my situation.  My new dam raised babies started getting diarrhea the second day of birth.  Their mothers udder is huge.  I actually noticed it the night before they were born and I thought she had another couple of weeks yet, and poof they were born that night, no other signs, just found them in the morning.  Anyway. The poop is milk poop, yellow, not the first dark stuff and messy.  What  should I give them to help?

Thanks,

Tammy

  • This is "normal" if the kids are getting more milk than they need. It can look like they have mustard squirted on their back end. You don't need to do anything really. You could just milk out the doe. Sometimes they have way more milk than the kids need the first few days, and the kids can be little piggies. If you milk out the doe, the kids at least have to work to get milk for at least a few hours after you milk her.

  • Update:  The boys are doing better.  I've given them 3 doses of 3 cc peptobismol and a little probios paste once a day as well.  The one had watery gold poo yesterday but there is less today and they are active now.  Yesterday I could tell they just did not feel well and slept alot. Yes, I'm sure they are getting alot of milk! Never thought of taking any out though. You know, I do remember this happening to another set of twin bucks a couple of years ago with a different doe.  But last year both does had girls and no issues.  I'm going to note this.  Maybe the boys are just more greedy eaters and cause this..LOL

    Thanks for the comments....

  • I guess you just need a more experienced answer than we have. Sorry I don't really know either. Hopefully someone else will know more. What I would like meanwhile is a little more info. I assume from what you say they are a few days old now. Is that right if not how old are they and how many of them are there? They dark stuff is over quick in goats. The color sounds right. And it should be pretty loose if they are that young. Is it WATERY or just real soft or what? I am just not clear if it really is diarrhea. If they are only a few days it won't be little berries yet! Do you think there is something wrong with moms udder? Do you have a pic of it? It isn't like rock hard is it?

  • Hi Tammy, I had babies at the end of July and from my experience, my babies had a couple of days of tacky yellow poops, especially one of my bucklings to where I would have to wipe his bottom with a baby wipe because it was so messy.  After about a week he just started pooping a little less messier (for lack of a better word!).  Is it tacky or runny?  I totally agree with Patty where they might be getting alot of milk.  I'm thinking that is what happened to my one baby (he was part of a set of twins).   Congrats and good luck!

  •  Totally just thinking out loud here:  I really am not sure I have an answer for you, but I'm wondering, how many kids did she have?  Do they all get to nurse pretty much the same length of time and have the same consistency of poop?

The reason I ask is I'm wondering if there's a chance they're just getting a LOT of milk?  If you think that could be it, maybe you could take some of that milk so the kids get less of it?

I hope someone else here has a better answer for you! :) Best wishes and congratulations on your new babies!
