Why I am happy about an abscess!

We've now had 3 goats with abscesses on their jaws over the past year, the most recent two within the last month. For various reasons we haven't been able to take a swab of the pus into the vet to be tested for Caseous Lymphadenitis so I'd just become resigned to the idea that we probably had it in our herd. Even though I was assuming it was CL, the pus didn't really fit the description and the lumps grew really fast which is apparently unusual for CL.

Today I had to pull off the dried up outer part of an abscess from one of our LaManchas and I examined it.

There was spear grass in it.

She didn't have a CL abscess. This is so awesome. And now I suspect the others had the same thing. I'm very happy. Not so happy about spear grass in our hay (although I know it's around), but very happy we probably don't have CL in our herd. If we have any more abscesses I will still try to get a swab to the vet.
