Soooooo...

I recorded Mini and Milton's breeding to share with those of you that are new to breeding, and would like to see what a standing heat looks like, and what a good breeding looks like.

It's breeding, and goats, which *can* make a grown woman blush, but I thought it would be helpful to have something like this as a resource for those of you that might need to see what you're looking for.

I have limited views to this video to those with a link, so please don't share it with people that might be offended by what it is.

  • Thank you guys very much for your replies! Its reassuring to hear that it "went well" I'm very excited for spring kidding! The farm that I purchased my goats from has been amazing with helping me along. I've read a ton about goats before I got mine in July, but it seems there is always more to learn.
This website/discussion as amazing! I just wish I'd found it a year ago!
  • The squat/arch is a reaction to a successful breeding. I'm not sure what part of it triggers the response, but in my experience, if there is no squat/arch, the breeding won't take. She won't expel enough of the semen to make the breeding unsuccessful by doing it. You can allow them to breed more than once to increase the amount of sperm still left inside, too. :) I don't leave my does in from more than three or four breedings. (a couple hours) Because my bucks chase my girls around so determinedly, and I think it wears on the girls. Plus, it's not necessary once you've witnessed a good mount or two.

  • I think she "tucks in" to help draw the semen up into her. It's okay if some comes out-- that just means a lot went in!

  • When my does have a successful breed by the buck, the doe tucks her bottom in, she does not arch her back. The buck must have the "thrust" and then she will tuck her bottom and that is a take.  I let them breed as long as she allows him for a successful breed.

  • I'm breeding as a newbie. My doe went in heat today, and similar to your video, she squatted after they "mated" I'm assuming the white is from the buck... This video was nearly exact what mine did today. Why does the doe arch her back and squat like this? Will the breeding still be successful if it just comes back out again when she does this? I probably sound stupid asking, but like I said. I'm new to this...
Thank you for posting this video, it was helpful.
  • this buck will be 2 years - the doe is not tall for a Nigi - nor short, bout 19 inches. he is taller than her not by much, but long in body. My other buck - same age - another doe was in with him - he chased her like a lunatic - but once he caught up to her - wham. bred.

I wonder with the younger bucks - if there is a size issue. My young buck easily bred my girls who are small and I keep them relatively thinner. He bred my friends goat easily as well - she was also smallish and trim. But he had a very difficult time with a larger doe of another friend. He couldn't get his front feet around her well enough to be able to reach her with a thrust. He tried and tried and she stood somewhat well for him. I think she gave up and he gave up. I personally don't think he succeeded but I hope when I wasn't there that somehow he was able to contort a way to successfully breed her as I know the owner really wants her bred.

Do other people have any issues with girls with wider girths and younger bucks who are gung ho but just don't have the height to cover a bigger girl?

  • My last doe to breed was an old pro and my young buck took a good 45 minutes to get it done to her satisfaction. I watched him mount her repeatedly and not complete his mission-- over and over and over. I wondered if he was too tired, or was just not feeling that virile (lol) but it took a long time in my opinion to get her bred twice which is what she wanted. Once he had done it the second time, she was ready to get out of there in a hurry. With the other two he bred, he got the job done lickety split.

  • oh, I watched - the deal wasnt done. (closely).

  • He is very gentlemanly, isn't he!? lol I don't know what to say about your Q re your buck's aim... I haven't had that happen yet, although I can say that only this year did my does really do the squat. Last year, they didn't do it, and all three that I bred got pregnant... so no squat might not mean that he didn't get it done.
