Website

Hi all, can anyone recommend a website to me that would have a list of plants that are toxic to goats?  Our babies are in our back yard for right now, but when they get larger they will be going into our field and we have a variety of plants, trees, and grasses, weeds etc.  I want to make sure they aren't harmful and if they are have them removed before we transition them.. Thanks!!

  • I like that Fiasco mentions when a plant has made BOTH lists, and why she thinks that might be. :) Glad to help!
  • Thanks these lists are really helpful!!

    I personally like FiascoFarm.com's list. It's pretty extensive. http://fiascofarm.com/goats/poisonousplants.htm

It can get very confusing, we are in the process of ripping out of the mountain laurel ,rhododendron and azalea

on our property. It's going to be a big task, but I know that mountain laurel, rhododendron and azalea are some of the worst plants. The goats are in a very secure pen and I do have a sign up that say's please don't feed the goats but you just never know.

Here's a  web site I found with a list of plants. There a lot of web site to chose from.

  • I think most house plants and flower gardens are not good for goats, which would include ivy, daffodils, irises, etc.  Fiasco Farm has a good list, but there are plants on there that some say are poisonous and others say are not...  it can be difficult to know.  It might be a good idea to have charcoal on hand just in case.  I don't know if anything else is good to give too...

  • I agree..  I read on one site that cabbage leaves were bad then another site that said they were fine.  I am paranoid about letting them into my garden with me because I fear they will eat something that will make them sick.   We have Russian Olive trees and a lot of Ivy growing on trees I am mostly curious about.. Any help would be great :0)
  • And I've seen one list where turnips were bad for goats and another list that said to actually grow turnips for goats. So confusing!
  • I have never seen a list that is actually accurate. There are discussions about this in the archives -- most were started by someone who saw one of those lists and thinks they're going to have to cut down dozens of trees. Oak is on all of those lists, yet our property is covered with oaks, and it's not a problem.
