Very large goat with prolapse coming

My last goat is due to kid in one week.  She is so huge!  Now when she sits down she starts bulging out her back end a little bit.  Is this going to get in the way of her being able to deliver?  I had two kiddings so far this year, and neither one went well.  I'm so certain things are going to go bad again.  :-(  I would be surprised if she didn't have 4.  I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement or things to be aware of.... I don't know.

Oh, that does sound good. Seems like the whole thing has been a really long rough ordeal, but it really does sound as if it is going to have a happy ending. Sooo happy for all of you!

  • Oh.. I also gave her ProBios on Tuesday to help jumpstart her ruman.

  • Her 147 was this past Sunday (May 6th).. I pulled the first kid around 9pm Sunday.

She was hurting pretty bad for the last few days. Has been on pain killers, penicillin, and Nutra-Drench.. I had the vet out on Monday evening to give her Oxytocin to help her get rid of the placenta. She was just too warn out and sore to do it. The vet also went ahead and checked her uterus (said it felt good) and gave her an iodine flush. (I had already started her on the Penicillin so the vet did not need to do that)

Monday and Tuesday she would not get up to eat/drink until after the pain killers took effect.

However, each day has been getting better. Yesterday she was up moving around, eating, and drinking more than the day before. This morning (May 11th) I went in and she was up and eating and had not had any pain meds in 12 hrs so decided to not give her any more to see how she does. I am monitoring them from the office via webcam so can run home if she looks like she is not wanting to get up again.

She will continue to be on the penicillin and Nutra-Drench until Monday. (7 days) At this point I think we are past the worst of it. The big “help” is I am seeing improvement every day. She has also never lost interest in trying to care for the kids. Even when she did not want to be up she was trying to lick them and talking to them. I was also going into the pen Monday & Tuesday every two hours around the clock to make her get up to let them eat.

So she seems ok now? When was that 147 day- When did she kid? Just wondering with all that trauma and having to go in so much etc. Is she past the point of having to worry about infections etc. You know has it even been long enough to know if she is going to be alright?

  • Glad she finally delivered. It's true..the prolapse just disappears after kidding.

  • So the update on my doe (She went on her 147 day). She ended up having 4 babies in there (All fairly good size). The prolapse started sucking back in with each minor contraction. By the time full labor was in affect the prolapse was gone and not seen again... As a side note I had to go in to get all of them out (I think I had every type of "bad" position there is on this one). It did not feel any different inside.

  • Hm...I dealt with a huge prolapse last year and put sugar on it to dry it out.  It did not in any way interfere with kidding but there were five in that bunch!

  • This is a vaginal prolaps. Prolapses exist if either the vagina or the rectum is outside the doe's body. Prolapses in pregnant does usually happen during the final 30 days of pregnancy -- if is going to occur at all. The two most common reasons for a prolaps is the doe being overweight or has several babies inside pushing on her vaginal canal or rectum. As long as the prolaps continues to go inside I would not worry about it. If the prolaps stops going in call the vet. Most vets will sew the vagina closed to prevent the prolaps from coming out. The issue with this is that you HAVE to be there to cut the stitches when she goes into labor.

Our doe prolapsed a few weeks ago (She is huge as well.. kidded triplets last year.. vet thinks we have quads this time.). It was going back in until last Saturday. I called the vet and she did not want to sew the goat up because her due date was the next Friday. So she instructed me to put Vaseline (Petrolleum Jelly) in it three to four times a day to keep it moist (This is the big concern with a prolapses.. if a doe is dry she might rip during delivery.. this is why they sew them closed). She also suggested walking the doe at least twice a day for 10-15 min (Aggressive walking) to increase circulation. This seems to be helping a lot.

Now to delivery. No the prolapses will not interfere with delivery. As they have a contraction the prolaps should suck back in.. When they rest it will stick back out. As the babies are delivered this should all correct itself. If for some strange reason the prolaps is still there after all the babies are out call the vet asap.

This is a pic from this morning of our doe. As you can see the prolaps is sticking out. You can also see the Vaseline I had applied to her. Today is her 145.. Almost there. As a side note she did not prolaps with the triplets last year. Also last year was her first kidding. I do not plan to breed this doe again. y are going to occur at all.

  • I've never had this, but from what I've heard, I don't think it will cause problems with the kids coming out. The potential problem is that the uterus could come out. I'd contact your vet and discuss options ahead of time, so you can make a decision now, rather than in the heat of the moment.
