  Heather

  I just was added to this group and wanted to reach out to someone in my area. I have unregistered but full ND and I will have a doe that I would like to trade for and unrelated this fall. Just 2 weeks old right now. I had 3 females but one prolapsed this year and another retained a baby so I only have one left to breed. Please let me know if this is something you might be interested in doing. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

  I think when they are 6 months and older banding is extremely painful for them for a long while.  -- That's what I was told anyway.  Everyone I spoke with prior to doing it, told me he was too old and it would be too painful for him.  Never ever again  :-)

  Well, I was kinda horrified.  This guy that lives around here is a horse shoer and the local feed store (after not being able to find a vet to do the castration($100 for a $20 goat?)  anyway the other vet was in capitan and she would charge $40 and a $55 trip charge...ouch.  So this guy had experience castrating older donkeys, calfs etc etc.  I watched the video on youtube on how it is donw (cutting the bottom of the sack and pulling out the testicles etc etc).  I discussed it with the guy.  Then I went to Tractor supply and got the tentus toxoid. 
  
  Well, he came with his two daughters, and they turn the goat down and I walked away (didn't want to hear the scream which only lasted about 4 seconds) and I turned around and he had the entire testicles in his hand and just sliced them off.  He did sterilize the knife and wash his hands but did not use the benedyne I gave him. 
  
  I watched Ben get up and he was dripping blood and I was freaking out.  It was not what I was expecting.  I asked him what if he bleeds out, he said that he won't.  He told me that is something happened he would get me another goat.  This was about 5 pm ...Anyway, Ben went under the motor home and I went to him and offered him food and he took it.   I thought, he can't be that bad if he accepted food.  The next day, he brought me Mia, his daughters goat. The next day he was walking around, three days he was acting like it never happened trying to get some...  :-)  whoa...   I guess that is what old school farm people do.... being a city girl... wow.

  I would like to get more after I adjust to these but want "girls" not boys.  Don't ever want to experience anything like that again....

  that was a lot of good information.  Unfortunately the vet here is a bad vet and has hurt more animals than has helped.  So, I am at a disadvantage with no vet care or vet prescription.  When Ben got castrated, I sprayed Vetericyn on it a few times a day...and because I could get the tentus shot at tractor supply I did that before the deed was done.  You don't give the tentus toxoid to the does?  I don't plan on getting Mia pregnant... both just pets.

  Okay, I thought Nigerians were Nigerian pygmies...but what do I know LOL  I just want to make sue I'm feeding them right...in reading the posts at goatspot and advice I am totally confused.  This is what I'm doing...(I gave him the tetnaus toxoid c&D shot before he got castrated, and tomorrow is the booster.  She needs one as well.  anyway:

  I am giving a small handful of noble goat (6 oz tea cup- 1/2 (3 oz) to each am and pm) and they get about a big handful each am and pm of alfalfa.They love the noble goat and eat the alfalfa but leave most of the alfalfa behind. They browse the rest of the day.
  I'm not sure what to do in winter, but is my feeding them correct so far?

  I was told they need the tetnus toxoid shot yearly, now I'm scared of anaphaltic shock if I give it to "her".  Just found that one out.  I don't think they get all the other diseases and such like back east, which is most of what I'm reading about..

  Heather I'm near Alamogordo and don't have anyone with knowledge about nigerians in this area... been waiting for this site to let me send a message but it's kinda nutz.  Wanted to get in touch to discuss it..
