Scabby. Scaly Goat Scrotum

My buck shamrock has a strange scaly, scabby area at the very bottom of his scrotum.  I have no idea what it is or if I should do something about it.  Here are a few photos of it.  He wouldn't stand still, of course, so they're not great.

Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks! :)

  • Thanks, Deborah.  I'm really glad to hear that! :)

  • IMO, you got excellent photos! That also happens to my bucks, mostly in winter. I've always left it alone and haven't had any problems. One of my goat medicine/disease books mentions dermatitis on the scrotum but doesn't say anything about it other than it can cause sterility. That's never happened here, so I'm guessing that it would have to be much worse to have that result!

  • Doesn't look like there would be much you could do with it at this point anyway... so I'd say keep an eye on it, and look for signs of infection or worsening. Maybe Deb will know something we don't, but it just looks like a spot that's healing to me.

  • I think you're right that it's not from urine in this case, and I also had the thought that it doesn't look new, but I sure never noticed it before.  That makes me feel lousy!  So, in your opinion, it's fine to leave it alone?

    Thanks Rachel, for your thoughts.

  • What!? He didn't like you fondling him!? lol

I don't have many ideas or ANY experience with this personally, but I wondered if it could be something to do with the amount of PEE they like to put on themselves... although your man looks pretty clean in that department. It also looks a bit like a healing bug wound. Ticks leave that kind of spot on some of my animals... It definitely doesn't look NEW.
