Registration

Hi-

Who should my goats be registered with? The goats I am starting out with are only registered with the NDGA, but as I want to get into some serious dairy-ness eventually I'm thinking that's not enough.  I guess a better way to phrase the question would be, which registries should I be looking for? It seems obvious that the ADGA would of course value the dairy-ness of the goat above all else, yet I believe the AGS awards for milking, too, yes? I am not interested in showing, primarily because I would have to go so far to do so. I wouldn't even care so much about the registration except that A)you get what you pay for and you are often paying for another breeder's hard work and B)I know that NDs are now on the "recovering" list for the ALBC and I would hate to have a bunch of unregistered, mixed grade animals screw that up. Or is my thinking totally wrong?

  • I would choose NDGA only as a second registry.  If I understand correctly, their registries cannot be transferred to ADGA.  I don't know if they can be transferred to AGS or not.  Some people do all three.  Some do ADGA and AGS.  ADGA is pro NAIS, I think.  AGS is definitely anti NAIS.  So it may depend on how you feel about those things.  ADGA has a great website where you can find out so much info and plan breedings.  AGS costs a little bit less.

As far is if you should register, Fiasco Farm talks about this and I thought she said it well.  It costs you the same to feed the goat either way, so why not register so you can sell it for more. =)  Then again, if you like your privacy, you may not want to register.  Lots to consider!

Rachel, yes, this is so important!  I have a friend who has been trying for a year to register two of her goats.  She sent in everything, but somehow the breeding memo got misplaced and she is having the hardest time getting them registered!  So the breeding memo is another one you absolutely have to have if you are using an outside buck.

  • NDGA is more strict on height, ADGA allows them to be a little taller. I would only register them with ADGA/AGS if you plan to show. All these registeries will allow you to transfer paperwork among them. I only have mine with ADGA because they are the only ones sanctioned here for shows. If  I had them with AGS I would have to purchase show win forms and have the judge sign them if I won a show-then do extra paperwork. I dont think having them registered in all three is worth it-just extra money.
  • I'm not sure... I only have the ones registered with ADGA. My breeder did the work. I know you need bill of sale(s) and their registration papers if you're transferring ownership. I think there are ear tattoos involved. I still have to GET one of mine tattooed. She's getting her tat when we go for her first goat date. :)
  • So if my goats are registered with the NDGA, what do they need to be registered with the AGS or ADGA?

  • I personally don't plan to sell many animals, but I do plan to register my goats with ADGA. That's where my two registered females are registered, and that's enough for me. I'm not in this "big" enough to worry about registering in more than that, but at least with my goats being registered at the one place, if buyers want to register at others, they can. I will actually have one goat that is not register-able, because along the way in her lineage, someone dropped the ball, and it's not traceable. One thing to be SURE to do, is get ALL sales transactions recorded. VERY important. Just as, if not MORE important than registering, because if sales aren't properly tracked, that can ruin a goat's ability to be registered if you can't track everyone down, and papers get lost in the shuffle.
