new from east coast NC

Hello

new to goats actually new to all of this really I started with chicks last year in feb so its almost a year since we started homesteading and trying to become more self sustained, We grew a bunch of veggies some did well some not so much.  We learned how to can and my jellies and jams this summer from our neighbor who is like our second grandparents.  We live in a suburbanite area and have neighbors on all three sides of us.  We are now looking to jump into the arena with two nigerian does they will be for milk and pets and of course loved like the rest of our herd.  I am really looking for pointer and suggestions on the dos and donts of goats.  We have all intentions of moving to a larger place much more in the country in the next year or so.

thanks

Jon

  • Jon, are you getting the does after they kid or baby doelings, or doe with doe kid or what?

  • I have found a breeder that seems to have a really good line of show/milking nigerians they are due next month so i probably wont have my first two girls till late april is my guess.  I am really excited and currently working on the yard to make everyone happy. especially the wife.  My entire yard is fenced with a 6' fence and just trying to get all areas ready.

I am sure I will have many questions as I go...

thanks for all the kind welcomes

  • I just started too. I have two backyard does, got them on September 3rd (this year) going to breed them in late January early February. Kids gonna be born in late June Early July (can't wait). Learning step by step.

  • Your story is so similar to mine. We live in the county though and I have been growing veggies for years, we even started a small CSA last year. Then chickens and turkeys, now goats. I LOVE my goats. We got them in sept, bred them in November, expecting babies in April. We are even getting two more in late feb. I am so new but I can say its a lot to learn so go slow. Just trying now to get herd name and register my two current does. Not to mention milking supplies, tattoo kit, milk scale, fencing......get two of the best does you can afford. My next two have a lot of milking stars in their line so they cost my more, but hoping they will pay for themselves with great milk and kids that are easy to sell. Good luck and have fun. They are so much fun
  • Welcome to the group! Seems like only yesterday (2002!) when we started out homesteading. You have an amazing adventure ahead of you! Chickens are a gateway animal for a lot of people!

  • I am from ny really so all of this is new but forums are awesome for info and people to bounce things off of.

  • Welcome, Jon!! Good to have you here! I started out as a City Chicken gal, and then we moved onto 7.5 acres in the country, where I grew my flock, and started in Rabbits, Ducks and GOATS!

  • P.S we have not picked a herd name as of yet though our red sex linx birds are betty and the reds  we are working on it
