My doe may be almost ready to Kid?????

Okay so I am almost rady to panic. My goats are my first ever and this is Bonnie's first babies. Not sure if I am using the right teminology but, I thought she was bred in September but in October she definately "stood" for Clyde. So I calculated the days and came up with the end of February ( approx). So today I noticed her vulva is swollen but her udder is still showing no signs of milk. She also is occasionally hunching her back and squatting when I rub her belly ( which is very uncommon for her) I suppose I could have miscalculated but now I am worried. I definately dont want her to have babies tonite- its 5 degress outside ( VERY unusual for us) I have placed a call to the vet to check her - hopefully tomorrw if for no other reason than to ease my mind. Any suggestions?

  • Congratulations! Kids don't usually nurse for more than 15-20 seconds at a time, which sounds like nothing to us humans! If you have any other questions, just ask! There are plenty of friendly people here to help you out whenever!

  • She is so adorable, a little huggable bundle of fluff!!  I'm new to goats and my doe just had 1 kid recently.  I too was worried that the kid wasn't getting enough milk so I watched them for a day and noted down how often he was milking and for how long.  When I added it up it was about 10 seconds every hour, and I was encouraged by people on this list saying that that was about typical.  Now that I am milking, I am  amazed at how good a milker the kid is, much better than me!  They seem to be able to get a lot of milk in a very short space of time.  Btw, if you want to milk, start now!  Watch and see which udder the kid prefers, and milk the other side out or it will go lopsided (like mine did :(...........)

So the new baby is here, only 1 Doeling, may be all she has. The vet is coming later to check her. The baby doesn't seem to nurse a lot. Not sure if I should be concerned yet.
