My buck rubbed some of his hair off

So I noticed this morning that Peppernut, my 9 month old buck, has a small nickel sized spot right on the back of his, er, package, where all the hair is rubbed off right down to the skin. It isn't bleeding.

He is in a (roughly) 1 acre pen with a doe right now. It has been pretty dry and dusty this winter, and the pen is just hard dirt. Could he have rubbed himself raw from lying down? They have a horse trailer they can get in for wind and rain protection, and it has a rubber-ish mat on the floor, which is softer than the dirt but I don't know if they actually sleep in there or not.

Do goats get fleas or anything like that? His coat is luxurious everywhere else, with no signs of rubbing or scratching. He seems in good health overall. Any thoughts on what could have caused this or what I should do?

  • I also fretted over this last year, and I was putting Vaseline on them (petroleum product? probably not good). I asked a breeder and her comment was "if you find a cure for that - by all means - let the rest of us know." lol - obviously, fairly common occurrence in the winter. :/ Havent noticed it this season.

  • Both my little bucks had this happen last year.   I couldn't figure it out so had the vet look.  Finally I guessed that it was maybe being rubbed on the wood floor if they pawed the straw away??  Glad to hear it can be common.  I did use a medicated cream on it a few times.

  • Most likely.

  • Whew. Thank goodness. So it would probably just go away on its own, or not really bother him?

  • If it's at the bottom of his scrotum, that's pretty common.
