Hi all,
I have a doe who is 10 days fresh today. I started milking her in the mornings without separating the kids when they were only a few days old because she had so much milk. Well this is how much I got this morning! The kids were up with mama bouncing around when I came in to feed. They are growing like weeds. I'm taking a class on DHIR this coming weekend to learn about milk test. I think this girl is going to be a gangbuster producer! I'm so excited since she is only 2 and her second freshening. Am I right to be excited? I'm so new to this I don't quite know what is normal and what is exceptional. Is my girl exceptional?

You can pasteurize on the stove top, without having to purchase expensive equipment. :) http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Pasteurize-Milk-at-Home/

Separating at night is the way to go but you don't want to do that until they are old enough to be eating solid food on their own. You don't want them to miss a meal until they can safely. Read Deborah's post on this:

WOW!!!
This is AWESOME!
We are newbies, and our first kidding will happen within the next few days or so - yikes!
We were going to try and let the babies stay with momma during the day, then separate them at night, so we can milk the doe first thing in the morning... will that work, do you think? Or should we consider a different approach.
Also - do you know anything about Home Pasteurizer machines?
I have medical problems and cannot safely have raw milk....
Give that doe some cookies! :)
You absolutely have the right to be excited *and* to brag!!! Congratulations.
This milk wouldn't fit in a 2 and a half pint jar so it's over 3 cups (it's a quart jar). Thanks for the kudos! I did milk her in the evening a few times and got about 2 cups but it made me nervous that the kids might not have enough that evening. So this milking was after NOT milking her the evening before and it was actually better than the mornings when I milked her in the evening before.
Wow! Yeah, I'd be excited! Congrats!
Julia,
That is very impressive!
I am most curious how much volume that is. I presume that that is a quart jar? Would that be more than 3/4 quart? (I can't really decide because of camera angle.)
That is the morning's milking. Would she milk that much in the evening?
Michael
That's great, Julia! If she was only a couple of days fresh, I'd say wait and see, but ten days fresh and still producing this much extra seems great to me. :)
