My girl Simone  had twins tonight - and the little doeling was so swollen in the abdominal area.   Felt like she was full of jello.  I have never seen such a thing before.  Her head and front legs were out and we had to get some lube around her and pull her out as she appeared to be stuck -by this big stomach area.   I expected something was very wrong internally and she probably would not live but when I went to check on them awhile  ago she was standing and seemed to have nursed.  She looked as though she was not quite  as swollen but still felt as if she had drank a full bottle.  Could she have had pressure in the birth channel that caused swelling?

I will probably wait till morning to see what is going on.   Mom is such a terrific mother she will take good care of them and hopefully the little one will make it thru the night.   They were all nestled in against mom and warm and dry so hopefully her situation will resolve itself.

  • So sorry to hear that she didn't make it, but it's not surprising. So sad when things don't go together quite right for them, and especially sad for the mama after she's bonded with her.

  • So sorry to hear of the loss of your little doeling. Best wishes to her mom, and her little brother.

  • Deborah - she wasn't having seizures just very weak and limp when you picked her up.   She seemed to nurse a little when held to her mom but you could just tell she was dying.   My hubby put her down the next morning - there was just no hope for her.   Hardly breathing and still very swollen thru the whole body area.   I have never seen anything like it.   My poor doe cried  all night and finally settled down today.  Little boy is doing fine.  I  spent a good portion of the night out in her stall with her.

  • I had a lamb born without an anus once, and he was having seizures within a couple hours of birth. That also happened to someone on here with a kid. I don't recall her symptoms but they had her put down the morning after she was born. If it is an incomplete colon I'd think that she would have some sort of additional symptoms by now. Anything else happening?
  • It was suggested on the Goat spot that the problem could be  Congestal Atresa ari (Water belly)   Complete or partial blockage of the anus or incomplete colon.   Does this mean anything to you.   Sounds kind of like the description of her body that I was trying to make.

  • I will keep you posted.   I checked for the anus - but maybe fouled up internally.   She is still surviving but weak - the mom is so dedicated and patient that I guess she is in the best hand with her mom.  I sure hate having a baby have problems - tears at your heart.

  • This is a new one for me. We had a kid born one year whose intestines were outside of its body. All sorts of things can go wrong, and when you think of how many little things have to be just right to create any living creature, it truly is a miracle that it all works out as often as it does. Keep us informed!

  • Wow! Keep us posted on that one. Very curious, and also sending up a prayer for you and the little one.
