Hot spots, can goats get them too?

I noticed this morning that one of my doelings had a terrible smell coming from her. After looking, I found that she was covered in puss. It basically is underneath her left armpit and has traveled down her left leg and across the left side of her chest.

I took her to the vet and we were both really unable to find a "wound" of some kind, so the vet said that it looked and felt like what  a dog gets called a "hot spot".

Do goats get hot spots?

Anyways, we have her on 1.5cc ampacillion for 5 days and he told me to bathe the area once a day until it dries and gets smaller.

Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

I have her in the house right now to keep flies from getting to her, but she in NOT happy. LOL Should I keep her penned up for a few days ot let her go back to Mom tomorrow?

Thank you all!

  • I am willing to try everything, or just about.  Perci is still very bald in many places, I keep a t shirt on her on the sunny days.............don't need sunburn on top of every thing else.  The TMG really smell but it is  worth it keeping her skin soft. Steriods do not help................

WhEn my goat began to loose all her hair I tried Panalog and over the counter med. It helps for hot spots but not EOSINOPHILIC PUSTULAR DERMATITIS ............NO ONE KNOW HOW TO TREAT IT AS IT IS VERY RARE

I know nothing but what I have seen in pics about CL, but to me I don't think so. All I can say after seeing the pics is, if it is really as yellow as it looks, is that I would put warm soapy(anti-bacterial) compresses on it, shave it, and keep using compresses and maybe drawing salve if it looks at all like something is in there to get it out, just in case. At any rate if nothing is in it I am wondering if it was just an abrasion from a scrape that has gotten infected. But you say there was pus and it looks yellow I would put antibiotic ointment on it to keep it moist so it will drain etc. Looks similar to what Marin describes. I wonder. Let us know if you see any improvement.

  • I agree Margaret, I don't think it is CL either. I think that it is just a nasty infection. The vet did do some shaving on it, but decided not to take too much off because the dried puss was taking off her skin like a scab. He told me to keep it dry, but I think I am going to try to keep it moist so I can get all that dried ick off. I am bathing her, but it does not seem to do much as far as removing much. The good news is it does not smell nearly as bad now as it did. :-)

  • Hopefully it is that or something similar. I do see a scrape in there so there is no telling what is going on till I can get the puffiness down.

We just had some staphylococcus dermatitis happen here. It doesn't look exactly like that, but it was a skin infection that caused pustules. The does who had it here started with it on the udder and then it moved into their rear "leg pits". Maybe this is something similar?

  • I have to run out the door very soon and head to Wisconsin for a TV thing in the morning and a lecture at a university. Humans have lymph nodes under our armpits, so I'm wondering if goats do too? Sorry I don't have time to look it up because I really want to know now myself! If she does have lymph nodes under there, it could be a CL abscess.

It is highly contagious, but I wouldn't worry about her being with her mom because odds are that's where she got it. Goats are positive for life, even if they don't have visible abscesses. My only concern would be flies, and Catron will keep them away.

  • She is a twin so yes, there is another baby to consider. Doing any cleaning will be very hard to do since she shared space with 12 other goats and 3 acres of field. LOL Her living quaters are wood so it will be hard to disinfect those too. :-( Can a goat as young as she get CL?

  • Kelly you really need Deborah' advice on this before you put her back if possible. Until then if I were you I would isolate her and treat her as if she were highly contagious. I didn't even think of CL. What I don't get is the way you say it travels down her leg and across her chest. It does sound scary and I just figure at this point better safe than sorry. I think I might start changing bedding and cleaning up were she has been staying with mom etc. just in case. Not trying to be overly alarming but it wouldn't hurt to isolate and do a little cleaning her living quarters just in case and until you can find out a little more. I might just try a bottle if you are real worried. Is she a singleton or are there siblings to consider too?

  • Here are a couple of pictures. Sorry for the clarity. I had to hold her down and take a picture with 1 hand. LOL

What we are looking at is her left armpit, left leg and chest.
