Homemade hay feeder

Hey guys...I am looking around at the junk all over my farm trying to think of something I could build into a hay feeder so they might waste less in their stall at night.

I have some vinyl lattice that looks like this (See pic)

I wondered if they could pull bites of hay out through that if I built a little one-flake feeder out of it.

Think it would work?

I can't think of anything to use for bars that I have lying around....

I have seen lots made out of old cattle panels- can you use fencing instead or is that too flimsy?

There have been so many baby crib recalls. I used the rainings from one for a hay feeder.

look at Deborah's page - it is on there.  all I would add is the wider base allows for a try to catch hay they drop - i pretty much have no hay waste -
  • my arent you clever. ^^

My thought was that you could maybe make it taller... and trim the lattice in various spots and in different sizes (the holes) so that the goats have to use their browsing skills. We used to use "puzzle" feeders for our animals at the Zoo all the time to make feeding involve more thought process. Keeps their minds busy, and life in an enclosure more interesting. Whenever possible, we made their feeders mimic the way they would eat in the wild. Having holes at varying heights, and of varying sizes would recreate "branches" where food is easier/harder to get to.

  • i did widen the base so there would be a tray in front - it is bout 5 inches out frm the bars.  those bars are porch railings

you could use lattice strips for the bars ^^

  • Here's Melissa's.

  • i think there is a picture on here using like cattle fencing - brings to mind - there can be food up the ying yang and the goats will stick their heads through the fence to "get to the other side" ^^

Melissa, can you link to the one you have now? I'd love to see it and get some ideas.
  • mount low 0- or put a couple of cement blocks or if you have some sort of wooden piece you could use as a block - for baby to stand on. ^^
