Hi~my name is Jen, and we have two does. We also have bees, bantam chickens and call ducks and I love to garden. :) Happy to meet other folks with Nigerians and learn as much as I can about them!

I think it can be hard to harvest, yes... but a friend of mine interested in switching to TBH has mentioned that we may be able to integrate plastic canvas as a support system that would allow the honey to survive the spinner. I'm not fancy enough for a spinner yet though. lol
I love our bees. I think they are so relaxing to listen to. Almost like running water might be ;) They are very very gentle and don't become easily agitated either. I have checked the top super with no gear on and not had a problem. I wouldn't make that a habit probably... lol! but they don't seem to mind if the light and temp are ok. :)
I have always wanted to try the top bar method--because it is so much more natural for the bees, it seems to promote their overall health. I understand it is difficult to get the honey from the hives though? I am excited to see how your project continues.
Jen, I'm so intimidated by bees... but I really wanted to get some!! TBH ended up being the kind of philosophy I have as far as sticking to things as close to nature as possible, BUT I have to admit, a big reason I like them is they are MUCH cheaper to get into, and less maintenance/knowledge up front to start a hive.
THIS is the guy I'm modeling my hive after. I've made some changes based on the information I have from buying THIS book and getting THESE PLANS for free on line.
