Greetings everyone!

For many years I've been thinking about setting up a homestead, I just didn't have a house or land of my own.  Well we finally have a home on an acre in NC.  Having organic food and raw milk has always been important to me and with the laws ever changing, I just want to be as self sufficient as possible.  I've spent many years learning about healthy nutrient  dense foods and now I need to learn about goats, organic farming, chickens, root cellars and solar power, it's a little overwhelming to think about all of this, and I need to learn.  We have a son and to wake up one day and not have access to organic food and raw milk is a little scary.  And to try and take on the government will be an interesting task.   The government will not change unless the people change, and from trying to help educate others about eating healthy organic foods, most people can't be bothered, they would rather believe the government, their doctors and sit and watch tv all day instead of taking full responsibility for their health.  So, I can't sit and wait anymore, it is time to learn and take action.   I just hope an acre of land is enough for what I want to accomplish, because aquiring a larger property equals more debt and that I don't want.       Thank you!  Sharon A Bunting

  • So nice to meet you, Sharon!  We have a lot of fun on here and the information I have gathered has been so helpful.  I am on the same journey as you.   It's an exciting and rewarding one, even with the challenges that come along =)
  • Welcome! We started down that path in 2002 and never looked back. Last year we produced more than 6,000 pounds of our own food. I have a book coming out in the fall that talks about gardening, home dairy, backyard poultry, and homegrown fiber. In the meantime, you can check out my blog, http://antiquityoaks.blogspot.com

You have an amazing adventure ahead of you!

  • Thanks Rachel!

Welcome!! You might like the book The Backyard Homestead!! It's got a TON of information, and even a "lay of the land" plans page for different sized acreage. You most definitely CAN homestead on one acre.
