Feed & Supplements

Received a big package from Jeffers yesterday. I believe my kids think I have went into drug distribution after seeing me with cow pills and lots of empty capsules. One of them actually asked what would happen if the police saw what I was doing. I of course told them that since this was clearly marked as copper for cows and we had lots of goats that I felt sure they would understand what I was doing, and that it was ok. However, I have realized that I am no longer sure I know what I am doing. I know why I have am. chlor. but am not sure how much to sprinkle on the food and don't know if I should only give it to bucks or does also. I don't know what to do with the sel. and vit. E I ordered not to mention the A D E B12 that I received for free with by purchase of sel. and vit. E. Yes, I have become bogged down in the war of feed and supplements vs. old age memory loss.  HELP! I am in the middle of swapping from Noble Goat to Goat Chow, I have alfalfa pellets, so so hay (pretty much whatever we can find right now, waiting on this years cutting), I am now top dressing with BOSS, a sprinkle of whole kernel corn and thor. kelp. Not sure what I want to do with the amm. chlor. and I dosed out copper yesterday. Finally fed it in oatmeal to everyone except 2 who did not want it so they ate it over a little sweet feed. I still have the big goat who thank God has NOT delivered yet. (about day 141) and I have never given her a shot for anything. Should I? Now, after kids, or not at all? What about her kids... Shots? Yes, no do they need one before disbudding? The tet. anti.? I know I read something about selinium preventing proper copper absor. or something to that affect. ..can't remember exactly. I mostly want to know what I should give Big Mama Marley before the babies come and right after?  And the babies? And about the amm.chlor.? How much? does too? I did loss my balance and fell backwards off the porch about an hour ago, banged up my legs and one forearm, whacked  my head on a 2x, I guess I can use that for an excuse as to why I seem so stupid today.Huh? LOL! Oh yea, I am good at that kind of stuff. Remember it for FUTURE times like THIS. It causes those brain leaks that Deborah and I suffer from!!! LOL! I must be getting the kidding soon nerves or something! Sorry!

  • I have read alot about baking soda but have not supplemented with it yet. Pat Coleby is a firm believer in it. I think I will put that out as well. My wethers would eat as much kelp as I put out, my does like it but don't seem to devour it like the boys. Thank you for the info Margaret!

  • Thanks, I did not even realize that part because I was changing for other reasons. Now I am really glad I ordered the ammon. chlor. If you want to replace it since you are worried, I ordered mine from jeffers and it was only 6.95. I just started with the kelp. I couldn't believe how crunchy sounding when they bit into it, I thought their teeth would fall out it sounded so funny! And boy did they love that stuff. Oh, if you haven't started free choice baking soda you should think about that. They love it too, and it really helps. I had one that went off feed and I could just tell for some reason what was wrong and what she needed. I got baking soda and she scarfed it up. It took two days before she went back on full food but the more soda she ate the more food she ate. I have kept it out every since and had none of them act like they had a tummy ache since then.

  • I meant the Noble goat has the ammonium CL not the chow. That is my concern with the chow, no ammonium CL for the boys.

    Hi Margaret

I am in the same situation with the ammonium chloride. I am switching from Noble goat to the chow which has the ammonium chloride. I would prefer to feed a product that is not sweet feed but that is not available around here. I supplement with thorvin kelp in with the feed and free choice mineral. We are finally getting our first cutting of hay, after a very long winter of sub-quality hay. I feel like there is no substitute for good quality grass hay for bucks and wethers and dry does but I am only two years in and still have so much to learn! That why I love this site. Thanks Deborah!

I'm good, just a little bruised up, as I said, I do this crazy stuff all the time. To me it is normal. Probably because of ADHD, and the fact that I dart around like I do all the time. It is a little dangerous because you are always trying to run ahead of yourself. Thanks so much. I have just been adding so many things over the past few months. The Sel./vitE is in the big tubes like horse wormer etc. The vit. A,D,E,B12, is also in the same type tube, don't know what it is used for but I will have it if I need it. You said, "can give tetanus". Most people do right? Not that it makes it necessary, of course. But is it ok not to? Have a lot of people quit that too? Oh, the Sel./vit.E, Do you know the dosages? That's what I need to know, now. And will it not interf. with proper copper levels or something? I did remember what the Am. Chlor. was for I just wasn't sure about the does, because of something I had read. That's good, I'll not worry about the does then. Thanks again, and sorry about making you tired. I'm sure I do that to all of you all the time. Once again it is my ADHD. I even wright long-winded. Ya'll be glad ya'll don't have to live with me! LOL!!!

  • LOL! I got tired just reading your post! Don't worry; you're doing fine.

Some people give CDT 2-4 weeks before kidding, so you're too late to get passive immunity to the kids through the mom, but it's not a big deal. We quit vaccinating completely seven years ago and haven't noticed a problem. You can give tetanus before disbudding if you want.

Ammonium chloride is usually mixed into minerals. It's supposedly bitter, which I suppose is why my bucks wouldn't drink their water when I put it in there. Anyway, the package of ammonium chloride from Hoegger has the ratio that they recommend for mixing it with your minerals. Sorry I don't remember what it is. I only did it once a few years ago. Does do not need ammonium chloride; only the bucks, and it's to prevent urinary stones. The boys have a TINY urinary tract, which makes them more susceptible to blockages.

Did you get the Selenium/Vit E paste? If so, you can give that to the goat that's due.

Sorry to hear you got hurt! Hope you're feeling better soon!
