De-lice - parasites

I was wondering if any one uses Python insecticide dust, Co-Ral or Diatomaceous Earth as a parasite control and which one is the best and how often should you use it?  Also is the Diatomaceous Earth the same as the one used in pools (white power)?

  • There is a very long thread on here about copper, but the bottom line is that it may have to be a multi-faceted approach. Your feed should be at least 35-40 ppm copper -- a lot of them on the market are 10-20 ppm. The mineral should have at least 1500 ppm copper -- some have a third of that.

I have a goat that has had hair loss that started  around the eyes and nose and flaky skin on her back and underbelly near legs.  I called the vet, she came out to take a look and she gave a copper shot and stated that is was a deficiency.  She has since came back and gave another shot and it still is not better.  If it is not better by fall, she is going to do a skin scrapping.  She did not find any lice.  She stated that it's just the goat and states that she sees this more in black goats.  I have another doe that eats the same things and she is fine.  I have had to change my grain to a more quality consistent grain and also change by salt block from brown to white.  I also now mix in minerals with the food.  I don't know what the next step will be after the scrapping of the skin.  Hopefully it will get better.
  • Once you clip them, the lice are gone. You don't need anything else. I use the #10 blade that we used for showing, but you could probably use a #7 and still get enough off for the lice to be homeless.

The vet said they are the biting kind.  I think the hair loss is due to minerals and not lice.    Yes, I have been wanting to clip, but waiting for warm enough weather.  It's still down in the 40s at night.

Question:  what length do you clip?

So would you go ahead and treat the rest of the herd and clip this one?  Or clip all of them and forego the second treatment altogether?

  • If she has lice, it really depends upon which type she has. If they're sucking lice, she'll get anemic, which could cause death. If they're biting lice, then they're eating dead skin and not really hurting her, but she's losing hair because she's rubbing/scratching. Have you considered just clipping her? It's 100% effective, and there are no side effects. If you're worried about her getting sunburned or cold, you can put a t-shirt on her or keep her inside for a few days.
  • This is day 14 after my first treatment of Permectrin, so I am supposed to give a second application today.  I'm wondering about the doe that has so much hair loss.  Should I treat her as well?  Or will her skin be too sensitive?  This morning I watched her for a half hour or so and did not see her chew her cud, so I gave her some probios and a subQ vitamin b complex.  A few minutes later she was chewing her cud.  Do I also need to take this into consideration regarding her treatment?  If she is severely copper deficient, is it better for her to risk having lice or to be exposed to the permectrin?
  • thanks Rachael, I just found some DE online.
  • Here's the thread with my comment/information about DE.

DO NOT use the pool grade!! I've used garden grade to treat bedding as a prevention, but use food grade in any other applications.

  • Not the DE for the pools. That stuff is toxic. But food grade I've seen mentioned. I don't use it, but we've only had goats for a month. I might pick some up for under their bedding. You could do a search for DE, there was just a thread on it a few days ago.
