Cocci Prevention dosages

I have 3 week old Nigerian kids and want to start Cocci prevention. I am using Sulmet. I will give it at 3, 6, and 9 weeks of age. Do I do a 5 day treatment when I am just doing a prevention or is it just a single does each time? What are the dosage requirements?

  • Yes, Purina Noble Goat is a medicated feed. One other thing -- you really do not want to feed it long term. Kids are most likely to get coccidiosis during times of stress, such as weaning or moving to a new home, and if you feed it for about 4 weeks at that time, you probaly can forget about coccidiosis for those kids after that. They really cannot get it prior to three weeks because it takes that long for the coccidia to go through their life cycle and cause the illness, and usually by 4 months of age, kids have developed natural immunity to the little buggers (the protozoa).
  • Like Noble goat Deborah? Isn't that what it is?

I haven't been doing anything yet and have had no problem so far, Thank God!

  • I really do not recommend using sulmet as prevention because then if your kids get coccidiosis, you will have to use a diffferent drug for treatment. It is similar to the concept of antibiotic resistance. Many of us are raising our own food because we do not like the idea of giving drugs to healthy animals. By keeping a clean barn you should be able to avoid most problems with coccidiosis. If you really need to use a preventative, use one of the medicated feeds as they have a diffferent mode of action than the drugs, so the drugs will still work if you were to need them.
