CMPK calcium drench-- does anyone do this routinely at kidding time?

I read on earlier posts (3 years old) that people keep CMPK to drench before and after kidding. Is this the norm or is that old news. I'm getting ready for kidding #2 and trying to be prepared for anything.

    I have the same stuff, Deborah.  I know a couple of people who, because of their doe's violent reactions to it, decided to taste it themselves.  I'm not that brave, but they said it caused a terrible burning sensation.  I've only given it to a doe once, but by her reaction, I'd guess it was indeed awful.  I've read it's the propylene glycol in it that causes that?

    I found some here, http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_search_results.html?gas=CMPK.  Looks like a special applicator gun is required.

    Not sure these are too helpful.  I had thought I saw some in the Hoegger Supply catalog, but I don't see it there now.

    I'd like to know this too... also, I only have the injectable CMPK but I've heard it can be used as a drench for kids that are struggling. Thoughts on this?

    I do not use it routinely, but I have it on hand in case a goat shows signs of milk fever.

    I used a drench very similar after my Ginger kidded this year because she was shaking a lot and didn't want to eat/drink anything.  I'm not sure if it helped, but she was fine later when I checked on her, so it didn't hurt. :)  If I thought I needed it again, I'd personally rather have the CMPK gel than the drench.  The drench has propylene glycol, which is irritating and burns the goat's throat going down.  None of my goats have ever been impressed with any product like this.  That makes me nervous about them aspirating the liquid.  The gel is much  more pleasant for the goat, and I've never had any trouble giving a gel product.

    I don't drench before of after kidding. I only provide some unsulfered black strap molasses with grain for the added mineral and energy boost.
