Hi all...
I have a lead on a buck I'd like to buy, his milk pedigree is stellar...
He is AGS, AGDA registered. The owner showed him this year & he measured under the breed standard at shows, but he looks leggy in the pictures so I asked her to measure him and she did (not with an actual measuring stick so possibly not totally accurate)? She got 24"
When I measured my two does I got 18" andd 19" inches tall (also done with a measuring tape, not stick). Is he too big to buy as a buck for them? I am gun shy after that C Section...
On one hand my does are so little I'd like to breed some height into their kids--but not if they can't birth the kids
Also does a buck have to be in rut to breed? I need these girls breed pronto. If he is not in rut, would he not do the job?
Thanks!

Glad you are happy with him. Hope he makes you proud!
Awesome! Congratulations! :)
Hey guys...just an update...I brought the buck home, measured him w/ my square and he is just a bit over 23, not quite 23.5.
Very pleased w/him, can't wait to let him at the ladies!!
Well, Juliana, when you get through making your deal on him post the farm name you are getting him from so I can look at what all she has. Like you, I am into going over the pedigrees etc. I just wish I weren't getting so senile and could remember all the pedigree stuff that I study. It makes me so mad that I can't remember all my goaties ancestors. I have some super great lines, even on my little girls (yearling-FFs) and have to keep going back to look at stuff that just won't stay in my head. Some of them have dads who are master chanp. / grand cham. all kinds of stuff like milking stars, top this and top that, and I can't remember it. It is so frustrating!
Okay! Read the comments on there about the pedigree, and I can see why you're attracted to him. Those are some milky goats. And I agree with what Margaret said about it being tough to figure out his size from the photo. I know it's a pain, but people should squat or sit on the ground when taking a picture of a goat.
Deborah- it is a current pic of the buck I am buying next weekend- the one I started this thread about whose younger, shaved pic is at the beginning of this thread. The current owner sent me a new pic of him all grown up & with hair.
Deborah,It is the 1/10 pic on her photos! Chocolate looking, white markings & facing right. He has a touch of that Rosasharn look, if you know what I mean!
Which picture is it, and which buck are you talking about?

The current pic of my buck is on "my photos" if anyone wants to see what he really looks like now
Well, Deborah...I am hoping that for my purposes since he does have high withers that he's not really so "big", like you are saying. I would be thrilled to never have another C section. For my purposes which are purely homesteading and the market near me for the babies is primarily home dairy or pets- I think he is fine even if he is slightly over height-- and I am not even sure he is since he wasn't properly measured.
He fits the bill in so many other ways-- not the least of which being many top ten milkers behind him...I'll chance it.
btw I have a current pic all grown up and hairy-- buti t wouldn't load :(
