Buck aprons?

I was wondering if anyone uses buck aprons on Nigerians? I read either on this list or another Nigerian list that in Africa, during times of drought, herdsmen are required to put aprons on their bucks so no breeding can occur. The does are the livelihood of these people and if they get pregnant during drought- they often die. In fact, owners can be fined if their buck is found breeding with does as everyone has the goats wandering freely during droughts. Since our goats have year round breeding - is this feasible? Can you take goats out to a pasture walk and include the bucks with the group with something like this without risking pregnancy. Being a control person- I like to plan when my babies are born- so I have been planning on keeping my bucks and wethers on an adjacent but distant property but if I had something like this- maybe????? Anyone know? Judy

  • This is such a great idea!  I wish I would have had one back in the fall and I wouldn't have had to deal with winter babies.  I still want to keep my bucks separate but this would help if they got out of their pasture so I wouldn't have to deal with accidental breeding.

There is not a lot of information on them but I am going to try my hand at making one at least for Co Jack and then I would not have to keep him penned up so much.  I think it would help them stay cleaner too.

When I make one I will post a picture of it along with directions.

  • I think this is brilliant! I can totally see how it would work. I agree that you would need to ensure that you only have one breed... and there are other "for instances" that you would need to consider... like the idea that housing a buck in the same pen as your does imparts a "buck" flavor to your milking does, because their udder is in close contact/proximity to the buck stank.

  • There's a thread started by Katherine Norton about Nigerian Dwarves in Nigeria.  If you look on her page you can find it.  It has the article you were refering to in the thread, as well as some more photos.  Seems like it works.  I've been thinking of trying it, but I'm probably going to wait until I have only one breed so that an accidental pregnancy won't be a huge risk, just in case.  Not sure when that will be.

  • Great Picture - is that an animal from the US or in Nigeria?  Was the pic associated with any information?

While ugly and irritating I'm sure for the buck - I suspect they'd enjoy the socialization with the others.

    We'll see!!

  • There's a picture of a buck with the apron on in the thread the Nigerian man wrote on here recently. I think it was he who was talking about it. The apron hangs down open behind the buck's front legs and when he jumps up to try and mount, the apron is pushed up against his penis so it's blocked. Kind of ingenious right? Maybe you can find his thread.

  • I don't know but I'm interested as well. I've been thinking about this lately too and wishing I knew if it worked and how well and what it took. With only two bucks it'd make things easier if we could pen them all together, especially in summer when we rotate them around the place.
