When I got the buck here that I am leasing, today I think he brought my does into heat. He had been here 15 mins. and already I noticed one getting a little pink down their. Can bucks cause does to do this? I put her in the pen with him and he mounted her, she didn't want him to but I had a hold of her. I wanted to see if she was really in heat, but he did mount her and I am not sure he was on long enough to do anything - maybe 5 seconds. I then noticed a little bit later - like 10 or 15 min - that that same doe had white stuff on/coming out of her vulva which was not there after he had mounted her. Can does expel the semen or was it mucus from her being in heat? I can't imagine him getting the job done in that amount of time..

Well, if he's 2 years old, then never mind! :) That what happens when I read too fast!
I re-read your original message slowly, and based upon what you wrote, I don't think your doe was in heat. If the only thing you're going by is that you think her vulva looked more pinkish, that is pretty much nothing. Vulva is the last thing I look at, and sometimes I don't even look at it when a doe is acting like she's in heat. He did not bring the does into heat instantly. When they say does are in heat for 12-24 hours, that means the hormones are going up and then down during that time, and there may only be a couple of hours during that time that they can actually get pregnant -- which is when they are in standing heat.
If your does just suddenly got all prancy and their hair was standing up, and they started acting bossy, butting heads and mounting each other, that was just because you brought in a new goat. They would have acted the same way if you'd brought in a new doe. They were just trying to establish the new hierarchy.
I would keep trying over the next few days, and then, if she's not accepting, you will know that you most likely caught the tail end of her heat cycle. Mark it down, and try again in 18 days. :) I think that "they" say a buck can bring does into heat 5-7 days after his arrival, so you might start seeing your other does acting like they are in heat soon.
I escorted her back into the buck pen about 10 min. ago and she still didn't want anything to do with him. Could it still be too early or am I going to have to wait til the next heat cycle. He was A LOT more buckish this morning though and was grunting and making all kinds of noises chasing the girls around, which yesterday he was a lot more relaxed about it. That may be because he has had time to adjust to his new surroundings unlike yesterday he had literally just arrived.
Deb I don't think I mentioned anything about him being small. He is 2 years old and has bred quite a few girls already. I did say the DOE was a yearling though.
Ditto on everything Rachel said. Some does have silent heats, so although it's true that bucks can bring does into heat, they can't do it in five minutes. She may have been in heat, and when she smelled him, she responded. It could have been too early or too late, but if you had to hold her, she was not in standing heat. That's why it's called "standing heat." :) They will stand there and let a buck breed them over and over again! Heat lasts 24-48 hours. If it was a little early, the sperm might live long enough for the egg to show up. If it was too late though, it was too late. The other thing I noticed about your post is that you mentioned him being small. If he is quite young, his sperm count may not be high enough to actually get her bred in a single breeding.
lol Trust me. I was in your shoes just a year ago!! It's so much easier with the buck on your property. :)
Can you tell this is my first time breeding goats? LOL earlier this year I took this same doe to get bred so didn't have to worry about it! Although 5 months later I find the breeding didn't take.
Ahh I see, I guess I will try again tomorrow! Thanks :)
You should mark down this time, if you think she's in heat, and watch her closely again in 21 days... (or a little sooner) look for more flagging with her tail, swollen vulva, more moist vulva, and if the buck is in a nearby pen, she'll likely be standing as close to him as she can get. If you think you might have caught her at the start of a heat, (which is likely, since you think the buck induced it) then you can put her back in tomorrow and see if she seems more receptive.
She might be at the start or the end of a heat cycle. If she's not standing, she's not in full heat. Age doesn't matter. She'll stand when she's in full heat. :)
