ADGA genetics tool

I am attempting to figure out the ADGA genetics tool for breeding. When I enter the dam and sire, it displays polled ancestors and there is a flag for polled and black ancestors. I am trying to figure out the polled and black connection. I would appreciate any insight anyone can offer. We need a manual to interpret this language!

  • Oh, cool, that would make perfect since and what a great idea too. Especially since they do allow it on a doe. I did not even realize that they did come in blacks. But I think it is kind of good that they do allow the black in a doe I can see how some limited use could help keep the color deep and rich but makes since not to use a buck because the influence of 1 buck can be so much stronger since he could sire so many offspring. I am assuming that would be the reasoning behind that! At any rate I can see why what you are saying would make that aspect of this tool very useful to those breeders. Perhaps with more use and more animals added to this list over a period of time we ND folks will be able to get better statistics on our odds on colors. I for see that being pretty difficult with so many options in our breed though. But it could be nice. I may be wrong with out the years of breeding that some of you have, but it seems to me that the buckskin pattern seems pretty dominant. That bothers me a little because I have a lot of that and chocolate. I love them both especially the buckskin. I have to admit that it does seem to me that many of the most beautiful NDs that I see are buckskins. But I just don't want to be overwhelmed with almost only them or chocolate. 3 of my 9 yearlings are chocolate-1/3rd is a lot. Oh Well-after kids come we will see!

  • Now that Shannon mentioned black toggs, I remembered black is also a problem with oberhasli. Although a black doe is okay, you cannot register a black buck. So, I guess they have black on there so that you can see if you're getting too much black in the pedigree with certain pairings and thereby increasing your risk of black offspring.

  • Pretty nifty tool if it works, saves alot of research time, but I need to understand it better!

  • That is weird! Yes, I put names in but they are apparently not kin. Since most of mine don't have their papers yet I can't do much. I put in Butter & Generals Names.

  • I also noticed today that the pedigrees are incomplete, when I looked up the same 2 goats last night they were complete. Not sure why.

  • I was just getting ready to post the link, I see Dawne provided it. Margaret, you just click on the generate button and the pedigrees will display showing any ancestors they have in common and the % inbred to the left of the pedigree. There is also other information to the left but I have no idea what it is like: ETA 21 and ETA12?

  • Dawn are you on right now. I Need to see what you can tell me about this. I put Butter x General in and info came up, but I don't know what I am looking for!

  • I can understand why they designate polled goats, but I have no idea why they're pointing out the black ones. I put in a goat that is pure black, and it did not highlight her. Also, the pedigrees are very incomplete, and I don't understand why. I'm putting in does that are registered with ADGA, and their parents are registered with ADGA, but it is very spotty. :(

  • Can you give us the link to that? My daughter used to use it, but she's all grown up and working as an engineer now, and that's one of the things on my to-do list!

  • What I want to know is: Where to find whatever you are talking about-have never heard of this tool but it sure sounds interesting. If I can find it I will try to learn about it with you!
