You can have it tested, but if you don't notice the sulfur smell, it is probably ok. Also, if you know what to watch out for in mineral deficiency, you can just keep an eye on them. To be sure, take a water sample in for testing. =)
We have well water and we all drink it, but in the last year or so it has developed a sulfur smell when you first turn the water on - in some sinks, but not every one of them. I never had a problem with my first herd, but this herd had severe mineral deficiencies. I don't know if they were deficient when I got them in the end of January, but by May it was very serious... and they had minerals the whole time. I switched to a higher mineral and started giving them my neighbors water and they are fine, but it took weeks to recover. I'm hoping a peroxide well treatment will kill the sulfur bacteria. The rest of us are still drinking it...
We have great well water and every one here drinks it, us, cats, dog, iguana, chickens and our goats. We have had no problem and are happy that we have a well to get our water from.
It depends on what is in your well water. If you drink it, and it doesn't hurt you, then it probably won't hurt your goats. When I lived in Connecticut, well water was the best water you could find! In Illinois it can vary when you drive a mile down the road in any direction. Our well is very high in sulfur, which binds with copper and creates a copper deficiency problem in our goats. But sulfur makes water stink like a dirty dish rag, so we don't drink it. High iron can also cause problems, but I don't remember which one. If you have high iron and no water softener, all of your sinks would be orange under the faucet.
