Websites

While many of the members here already have websites up or at least partially up, I would love to see others take the plunge.   Reasons for not putting up a site usually fall into one of two categories - its too complicated, or I don't have enough time to set it up or maintain it..

There are a lot of FREE hosting sites out there, and some are certainly more complicated to use than others.  They may also require you to have ads placed on your site if you don't buy their premium package.   And if you are like me you want something cheap AND easy!

I personally started off using Wordpress, which is great for blogging and sharing pictures, but not so great if you want to post pedigrees and such about your goats.   After asking around at the HomesteadingToday forum I had several people tell me about http://www.weebly.com.

Weebly is a FREE hosting site, that is drag and drop easy to use and if you don't purchase their premium package the only ad you will see is a small single line of print at the bottom of the page saying the site is hosted by Weebly.   There are over 70 templates for you to choose from, so customization is easy.   You can choose to have a blog page or not, and you can add as many pages as you want including hidden pages.  (For example, my pedigree pages are hidden pages - they show up only by clicking on links) You can also set up to sell products using Paypal or Google Checkout - perfect for those of you with soap making or other crafts.  You can see all of the features offered here: http://www.weebly.com/features.html

If you prefer to have your own domain name, the simplest thing is to purchase it from Weebly, but the cheaper and only slightly more complicated option is to purchase a domain name through GoDaddy.   And if you want some extra features you can sign up for their premium package at any time for as little as $3 a month.

So take the plunge and try creating your own site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is.  And if you have any questions or want a custom photo header created for your chosen template let me know and I'll do my best to help.

  • Oh good.....thanks for the heads up! I had three spare bottle of Viagra sitting here that I was just going to see if anyone was interested in....and it was tested by Russian mail order brides coincidentally. HA!

I will put this info in the for sale forum too.....thanks!

    Hi Michelle,
As long as you're selling something that's relevant to goats, it's fine. So, don't advertise Viagra or Russian mail order brides, since those are things that your average goatherd doesn't need. You might want to post more info about your son's services in the "For Sale" forum.

Not sure if this is polite or proper, but I'll put it out here and moderators can decide if it is "spamming", LOL

My son who is 16 is very gifted in computer graphics, camera, video.....in fact, he is leaving for California next week for a week for a conference/trip he won by making a commercial...Anyway.....he can help out anyone who wants to put together a website, give a little facelift to your current one or maybe just make a logo for your herd/farm. He is doing this for a nominal amount to raise money for his next camera. He is honest and fair.....and will work hard to make you happy with the final product. He did our farm's site (www.kingdomkidsfamilyfarm.com) and just launched his own to promote himself.

  • Yes, it makes you look more legit to most buyers. And keeping the site updated helps too. Unless you have a huge herd you can have a Weebly site set up in a few hours and then updating it only takes a few minutes unless you just had a whole slew of kids born. :)
  • Excellent info, Jane! Thanks for posting this. If you're selling kids, I really think that having a website is essential, so that people can see pictures and pedigrees. Plus, today a lot of people look on the web FIRST when they want to buy anything.
