vulva pooch arrgghhh

Okay...this goat is going to be the death of me LOL I can NEVER tell this pooch and vulva with her. Here is some pics. Opinions.....she was potentially bred sept 1 which would be 98 days today if she is pg. what do you think? these pics are the best I could do as she won't ever let me take pictures from behind. She is the Queen.

I found pics of Maya last year bed and unbred and compared her vulva to these I posted here.  I don't think she is pregnant, unless a pregnant goat can go into heat while being pregnant and/or her vulva can turn red  LOL. I base that on her vulva being a RED slit.  Those pics were dec 7 so I'll be watching at 20 days to see if she goes in heat again and separate her from the other girls and see what happens.  If she were bred end of dec. would have May babies.

  • no (Maya) she did not stand well for her breeding. She is such a "B" that I'm surprised that the buck even got her twice (although she was walking away not running and fighting them).   My reg nigies do standing heat, but they let me know when they are in heat and they go to the buck area..  then again, last year it didn't seem like she was pg either and she won't let me touch her sides or lift her tail.  When I do, she bucks and goes after the nigies....  If she gets too out of control, I put her in another penned area for the night, that seems to settle her down a bit for a while.  I can't keep her with the buck in another pen as I'm afraid she really will impail the buck.

I have a young wether in with the does and he's pretty good at letting me know who is going in heat or in heat.  He has never gone after Maya (the queen) and she have never shown interest in the bucks since sept. 1.

I have three registered nigies that are pregnant now and I know that for sure.  One I just bred this morning.  standing heat and the push and tuck....6 times  LOL

  • I personally have found this "test" to be the least reliable of all tests. Especially on a goat that I'm not familiar with. I think that it's probable that there are changes in vula during pregnancy, but I also think that those changes probably vary a lot from goat to goat. So unless you have kept track and made notice for each goat, it would be hard to gauge.

Did she stand well for her breeding? It really does make a difference. If she's not standing well, the chances of a successful breeding go down.

I can't remember if it's been mentioned in this thread, but mineral levels are a huge part of good fertility in goats. I had a goat that gave me fits trying to keep her copper levels right, and she had all sorts of issues with breeding success and carrying kids... I ended up culling her.

I guess I don't know if it's normal for the vulva to change during pregnancy or not.

  • Yes I think the pooch test thing was on "thegoatspot".  That is how I first found out about it.  That is the reason I wanted to know if that goat ever kidded or not.    I know my crossbreed was penetrated twice on Sept. 1.  I guess I should just wait and see.  My other registered nigies are so easy.  They go right to the buck pen and stand there and I introduce them and boing after a few times we're done. 5 months later we have kids.   With this particular goat, I don't know, maybe after the date she is supposed to kid (she went 148 days last year) I should sell her as a pet goat.

If I remember, I think I went through this last year, even tho I knew for sure she was bred to that la mancha buck) I couldn't tell with her if she was pg until almost the day she kidded.  She surprised me with the bubble at midnight...

I guess I don't know if it's normal for the vulva to change during pregnancy or not.

  • I know this is all over the web, but I really hate how so many people now talk about the pooch test. It's really ridiculous to think that you can determine pregnancy consistently by looking under a doe's tail. I remember years ago people started talking about this on Yahoo groups, but it was something that most of us noticed when our goats were in their final month of pregnancy -- not early on. So, no, her vulva doesn't "pregnant," but a lot of goats don't at 3 months. One thing that jumps out at me is that her belly looks more like a doe that's lost her girlish figure than one that's pregnant. Reminds me of the doe in the post that you commented on earlier today.

Also, pictures can be deceiving, but this goat looks really small to have been bred to a la mancha. You're lucky she had three. If she'd had a single, you could have been looking at a c-section. Luckily, multiples tend to be smaller. But that could also be why her belly is blown out like it is. If she wouldn't let a ND buck breed her last year, she just wasn't in standing heat. And yes, they can go from not standing to standing in a matter of minutes.

  • It's quite interesting. She is a cross breed not like my other registered nigerians. She allowed a breed Sept 1 twice. Last year she wouldn't breed with the nigerian bucks, but I took her to a friend and she readily bred with a la manch buck. She kidded last March with three kids, first freshner. I tried her a couple days ago and she almost speared the nigerian buck. I took her out. She has been wagging her tail for two plus weeks now on and off, but I've noticed, as in the pictures, her vulva keeps changing. She doesn't appear to be in heat as she shows no interest since breeding the bucks that are kept nearby. She is so perplexing. Any suggestions on what's going on would be appreciated.
