We have twin does that are just over 3 yrs old. We initialy got them as pets and weed eaters to see how we got on and have loved having them so would like to start breeding. My question is are the too old? Any suggestions re buying a buck or trying to find one to "borrow/rent" - we are in BC, fraser valley. Thanks

I don't know about finding buck in your area but your does are not too old. The oldest first freshener that I know of was five she did just fine. Actually it was two does.
You may want to check with AGS or the CGS to see of breeders in your area as well as the breeder you got your does from for a buck.
Best of luck,

I've had a couple does that didn't get pregnant to kid until they were three, and they did fine. I wouldn't wait that long on purpose though.
I'm anxious to see everyone's input. I also have a doe who will be older as a first freshener next year. (I didn't have a buck she could breed to because mine was related, was supposed to borrow one but plans fell through, etc).
No personal experience with that, but some people have had does who did not kid until 3 years. It would be best if you could get them bred asap, because sometimes if they do not have their first by 3 or 4 then they may not get pregnant. But as far as that being to old, it shouldn't be a problem as long as they will actually get pregnant! At 3, they most likely will, IMO!
I won't get into the reasons, I am sure others will give you the pros and cons and there is a lot in the forum on the subject, but personally, I would buy a good quality buck asap. Suffice to say, that it can be difficult without experience to "catch" them in heat at the right time and since they should be bred asap, it would be a lot easier to accomplish if you own your own buck. However you will want to know what is involved in owning them.
