I am just curious about shaving my 6 week old baby goat. I live in southern ms and it is hot. He seems to pant a lot lately since it has gotten hotter. Should I shave him? If so how do I do it? I have shavers that I use on my horses and my dogs. I was just wondering how many of you do it.

Traci, I am in the SOUTH also and understand what you mean. In fact, I am a lot farther south than you but I would not shave my 6 week olds to try to keep them cooler. I don't see that being helpful. If they had a parasite problem like lice or flees and especially ticks, then yes. I know where my son lives in Tn. there are horrible ticks. I would not let those things get on my goats without shaving them down. Anyways he will be just fine where you live. If you do decide to shave him you may have sunburn issues, so look out for that, especially if he is real light colored.
I use Oster size 10 blades to clip goats, but he won't necessarily be cooler if you clip him. Typically, I only clip goats for shows or if they have lice.
