Separating Bucklings

We have 5 kids (from different moms).  One of the bucklings is 8 weeks today - he will be wethered on Friday and I'm wondering if I need to separate him from the doelings and does for those couple of days...ie how much liklihood is there that he would get any of them pregnant before then?

  • I mentioned using a Burdizzo in the other thread. Just to be clear -- that is not surgical, and it is not banding. It is a tool that crushes the tube that goes to the testicles, so they no longer have blood supply, but it doesn't break the skin. There is no risk of tetanus or infection, which can happen with banding or surgical castration. The only down side is that it is not immediately obvious that it worked, but you can just check the testicles every week or so, and if it didn't work, you can easily do it again. The kids recover from this within 15 minutes. MUCH better than any other method!

We are planning to wether Cappy in the next 1-2 days, as he is turning 3months old.  Have you ever done the method of removing the testes?  Our goat mentor is planning to show us how to do that, because he prefers it to banding...

How long does it take for a 3mo old buckling to 'recover' from castration (hate that word)?

What should we do to monitor him or keep him safe?

You can tell that I am nervous!

I agree with the others. I keep my boys with girls until 3 months old. I don't band them until then. I have never had a pregnancy that way. Not that it is 100% safe, but the odds are not good that it would happen.

  • I agree I had a buckling in with my does until he was 10 weeks old and did not have a problem
  • I would not worry about it. If the doelings are the same age they probably wont go into heat until they are at least 5-6 months old anyway. I have never had a buckling of that age breed a doe-yet. Have heard of it happening though. I kept my buckling with the does until he was 9 weeks but then I didnt have any of them in season.
