Selenium

I had a vet out last week and after a brief exam she said she didn't think my 2 girls are as far along as I thought but gave them there Bose while she was here. Now Ive heard that giving it with in the first 3 months of pregnancy can be dangerous. Does anyone know this for sure? The vet said if given in the last month more passed to the kids but we were close enough for them to get it now. She also said that they could test selenium levels with a blood test and I thought it could only be tested through the liver? Did I get a bad vet? Not to many vets to choose from up here. Thanks

there is no picture but it comes in a 14lbs pail.

  • Randy, the link for it is in the thread above. It's at Caprine Supply: http://www.caprinesupply.com/selenium-with-vitamin-e.html

I know this is an old thread but I am just reading and curious where you buy selenium to offer free choice?  I did a quick search on Jeffers but the only thing that came up is the gel.

  • Agreed! It's another one of those things that just seems like good common sense. Guess there are just to many people these days who don't have enough of that!

I think the thing that bothered me the most about it was knowing that some people wouldn't realize when they see that post that they may live where there is no problem at all and might want to use it anyway, not knowing any better.

If I remember right you said it is prescription only. I hate that for those that know what they are doing but it could be a good thing. The only thing that I know of that is script I wish I had is oxytocin! But I have used it before and would never misuse it. A lot of people can get their hands on it and do misuse it, which is so stupid and dangerous. But if I had it, it would be a rare and only when I was very, very sure thing for me to use it.

Had a Springer Spaniel once who had 12 pups and I called the vet and told him she wasn't having the rest, that she was wore out and needed some oxytocin. He assured me that she was just done, but that I could bring her in anyway and he would check her. We got her and all the pups stretched out in the backseat of the car and headed down the road, on the way she finally had another one. He checked her over, swore she was done, but with my insistence that she wasn't and her having had so many finally agreed to give her a shot just to make sure everything was cleaned out after so many pups. She walked out of his door, sat on the sidewalk and had #14. I opened the door laughed at him and told him "His name is Joseph after you!".

Never forget that dog or those pups or that day! She was gorgeous & so sweet & smart, the pups were awesome and that day was, well memorable to say the least! These are the same pups I spoke of awhile back, (some may remember) that she sat on my face when I finally fell asleep on the floor at daybreak, after waiting all night, and spit out the first pup! One little runt had a heart murmur and we planned to send her to Auburn if she lived long enough, but she died at 4 weeks, all the rest did fine. Great Momma!

  • I agree it is kind of scary that some people say things like "must have" about an injectable mineral. I'm sure in their situation it's something that solved a problem they had, which is why they're so passionate about it, but not everyone lives in a selenium-deficient area. I don't know anyone who's had goats die from BoSe, but I know two people who've had goats die from selenium and copper toxicity after injecting MultiMin, which is what a lot of people are pushing now. It has quite a bit more selenium in it than BoSe, so I was very hesitant to use it, even when it was recommended by a vet. And in my case, it turns out that injecting it every three months wasn't often enough to keep a buck from dying from copper deficiency, which just again points to the thing that I've heard several vet professors say -- never supplement with a syringe. Regular supplementation should be oral so that you keep a steady supply of the minerals in their blood. Injecting minerals causes large peaks and valleys and works great if you have a goat on the verge of death from a deficiency, but does not work so well in a situation where there is chronic deficiency.

I've had the free choice selenium out there since last fall, and the goats eat it very slowly unless they happen to run out of their Sweetlix, in which case, the selenium disappears rather quickly.

  • Thanks Jess, that's what I thought. Just wanted to verify before  I said something!

  • It is available through Caprine Supply. It is in a granulated form and Deborah suggested putting it out free choice just like the minerals. Here is the link. http://www.caprinesupply.com/selenium-with-vitamin-e.html
  • Deborah, I just saw a post on my fb page were someone was promoting the use  of the BoSe as a "must have" which I find rather scary after our discussions. I want to make sure I have this right! You have said that there is a selinium supplement that you are using that is feed free choice just like the minerals and baking soda, right? And what is it called and where do you get it?

  • Jess, you aren't the only one who feels more like you are texting! It's the benefit of having so many forum members and so many dedicated goat owners. I think a lot of us must just check the forum in between all our chores etc. in case someone needs help or moral support and if not just to see what we can learn. That's the way I use the forum and I think I love everything about it except that there is no like button or even love button at times.

  • Thanks for your quick responses. I'm on here so often sometimes I think this is more like sending a text and wait around all impatiently for a response. Haha. I'm definitely doing the free choose selenium now but as this is my first kidding I wanted to fallow the "normal" routine in my area. You told me what I was thinking and wanted to hear. Thanks. Have a great Saturday.
