Okay, I know I have heard "don't buy dewormer resistance"

I am researching & questioning local and semi local breeders for my next goat purchases.  Without any more detail as to which one this is because I don't want to air anyone's business, one of them answered this to my inquiry about deworming practices:

" I do rotate wormers between clear and white and I probably worm every 6 to 8 weeks unless I see signs before.  I do frequent fecals since I can do them myself."

If I understand correctly, this is not the recommended way to deal with resistance, right?  Can anyone help me understand how deworming like this might impact a kid that I might buy at weaning age/ how that kid might impact my herd?

What are other people's feelings on which herds you will buy from when it comes to the dewormer problem?  Thanks

  • I'll let someone with more experience handle the details of explaining that.

All I can say is that I will not let this stop me from buying if the quality of what I want is there. What I would do is use this as a guide in how to handle what I purchase. In other words I would, keeping this in mind, adapt practices to slowly change the way this individual is managed to what I consider to be a more suitable method.

The fact is it is very hard to find everything you want. When you must find what you need in a certain area at a certain price you sometimes have to give a little on somethings. Although this is a very important matter, you should still consider rather or not good management will make it a feasible option if the conformation and production of their stock is up to your standards and if you cannot meet those needs elsewhere.
