pregnant goat?

I know my goat isn't a dwarf but instead a pygmy, but I was hoping for some advice. The last sunday in august our girl got out of her pen (she actually dug under the chain link fence) and went to see the neighbor's boy goats. They have neubians and some other bigger goats. The boys actually broke the latch that was padalocked to get to her. Needless to say I think she may be pregnant. She lives with a neutered boy pygmy, and we didn't ever want babies. Anyways, if she is pregnant I would like to prepare since it could gsppen later this month. I've include some picts in hopes someone could give their opinions. I don't have fantastic pictures since she is skitish around people.

  • I so second getting in touch with a vet now and be prepared to take her in when she goes into labor.  If I had any idea my doe was going to have problems in 2013, I would have done that.  It is better to make the decision ahead of time rather than at midnight with the doe in labor and having problems.  Also, if you have been giving her grain, etc., the kids will be bigger than otherwise furthering complications in addition to the larger buck.

Others here can better address if you should take her as soon as she is in labor or wait to see if she is having problems.  Either way you want your vet on alert and be familiar with what you need to do to get her there.

Last Sunday in August makes today Day 123; with gestation at 145 days, start looking for babies anytime the 20th or after.  Mine always came early with the exception of the litter that had trouble; they were late and even bigger than if they had been born at Day 145.

  • Thank you for your advice. I know its hard to tell. I will be in touch with the only vet around these parts. I love country life, but it does make it difficult in times like these. I love my pygmy, she came to us as a kid about 4 years ago. Although she is very skittish, she is gentle and well mannered and I would love to keep her around.
  • I don't normally like it when people expect you to be able to tell that a goat is pregnant from a picture, because it usually is not that easy to tell. However ... in this case, I'd say this goat looks pregnant, especially because I think I see the start of an udder. If she got pregnant with a Nubian, you need to get in touch with a vet who does goats. Odds are pretty high that she will need a c-section. Pygmies are notoriously bad at giving birth anyway and have a pretty high rate of c-sections even when bred to another pygmy. I know several people who quit breeding pygmies for that reason -- including a vet who said he quit raising pygmies because he got tired of doing so many c-sections. Odds of problems also increase with a first freshener who is older than 3 years old. If you are lucky enough to find more than one vet in your area who does goats, you might be able to compare pricing and think about what you will do if she has problems. It's much better to think about this ahead of time rather than trying to decide in the heat of the moment.

As for a pregnancy, you may be facing some pretty serious complications if she is pregnant from a breeding with a full sized buck.

  • Ok so I guess I need help uploading pictures first. :) suggestions?
