Prairie Fleurs first set of Twins!!

Hosanna kidded a lovely buckskin buckling and a black doeling with frosted ears and a white poll. We were checking her every hour and we still missed them being born! Sneaky girl!!!! Just like her mama! Buckling, Mischief weighed 2lbs 11 oz - doeling Elf weighed 1lb 13 or 15 oz I can't remember. Mama is taking good care of them it looks like altho after loosing one of my alpacas last week I've become frightfully paranoid that they're not going to get enough to eat. Especially Elf. She nursed multiple times tho so I'm hoping im just paranoid. Here are some pics of the new additions.

  • Congratulations!  So exciting. :)

  • Congratulations on your new arrivals! Super excited for you! They are beautiful little kids. Sounds like they have a good mama. Cool names too!

  • 1lb 5oz is truly tiny!! Elf has been pretty energetic this morning. She managed to get out of the midding stall 2 or 3 times to go off exploring on her own. She even managed to get out of the pen when have all the does in but thankfully Hosanna managed to follow and they were easy enough to put back in. I'm starting to wonder if I should have changed her and Mischief's names around! Lol She must be getting something to eat if she's got that much energy. I haven't seen Mischief nurse since last night but havent been out here nearly all the time.
  • The 1 pound, 5 ounce kid grew up to be normal and healthy and is 5 years old now!
  • We've had several kids that size this year that have done great! The smallest kid we've had survive was 1 pound, 5 ounces!
  • Thanks, Glenna! Since it's only Elf and Mischief I'm hoping she'll get enough. I was worried for a while that Hosanna wasnt going to let them nurse but it's looking like she's doing a good job. :) I'm really glad we're having some warmer weather; I think Elf would have been able to keep warm if it was much colder, even with a heat lamp. I thought of your Tiny Baby and was wondering how big she was was. It's really encouraging to hear of a smaller baby that thrived. I've had some bad luck recently and lost several animals and I pretty much worried myself sick yesterday.
  • For whatever it is worth, Flurry (Tiny Baby) was 1 lb. 10.5 oz. and thrived.  After the end of the first day, I supplemented her milk to ensure she got enough since her younger and much bigger sisters would likely get the most from mom.  I kept her with mom.  What was really precious was I noticed that Capri, when all three were sleeping, would go over to Tiny Baby and wake her up to nurse, like she knew she needed extra.  When they were all awake, she would be the first to nurse but the other two would see her and grab mom for themselves.  There wasn't much she could do since they were both over twice as big.
(I waited until the end of the first day to give her extra because I only wanted mom's colostrum in her tiny tummy until then; I held her to mom often so she could get all she wanted.)

Those two little sweeties are absolutely adorable!!!  Congratulations.

  • Ya she made me nervous too! We made sure they both nursed while we were out there then we gave them some space for a while. When I went back out they were cuddled together. I weighed them and then we moved them to a warmer place. Elf was shivering so we warmed her up and I made sure she nursed again. She seems pretty skinny but she sure wagged her tail the few seconds she nursed! By the time I left she so sleepy she could hardly hold her head up! I left them a heat lamp and I'll go check on them before bed and possibly turn the heat lamp off. It's supposed to get to a low of 33 tonight. If I turn it off do I need to worry about Elf staying warm enough? Also her tummy wasn't tight and round when she quit nursing but she didn't seem interested anymore. I'm terrified she won't get enough to eat and will die on me! At first Hosanna was so uptight that she wouldn't let them nurse but after we moved her she really settled down and was standing beautifully.
  • Congratulations! That one is tiny! Anything under 2 pounds makes me nervous, but (knock on wood), if they survive the first five minutes, they've always made it here. So, good luck with your new ones!

  • And Mischief.
