Today around 9 am while I was at work Isabel started pushing. I had tried to get someone to cover my 8-2 shift but the only person who could do it was already covering a shift for someone else. When I got to work and explained the situation she said I could go. I stayed for a while because we got a rush but I was back around 10 and Oviedo was dry and walking around. We had thought she was pregnant with twins because of her size so I was a bit disappointed that there was only one. I could see the placenta trailing but after about an hour to an hour and a half she started pushing really hard, so I called my mentor back and explained that she was pushing, but that nothing was moving. So we agreed that I should put on gloves and go in to see what the hold up was. Santiago's head was crowning but I could not find a leg to grab onto. So when she pushed I squeezed around the tail head to help her get the head out. Once it was out though he was pretty well stuck, as I discovered later his feet were back against his belly, making him too big to push through any further. I finally got hold of a knee and within 5 minutes the hard part was over. I wondered when he would end though...he seemed to go on forever... Oviedo was almost 3 lbs and Santiago was a smidge over 4 lbs. Both are healthy and nursing well. Isabel needed some nutridrench during labor to finish the job. Afterwords I gave her more calcium and a bowl of hot water with honey. She let the boys nurse while she slept and she was up again in about 45 minutes. Then I gave her some aspirin with warm water, and filled their water bucket with hot water, which they both drank from within an hour. She birthed the placenta around 4pm and shortly after was back to her old self. By suggestion from my mentor I injected penicillin into the uterus shortly after the Placenta came out. So far so good but I will keep an eye out for fever for the next couple days. I did not realize earlier that I had used the last of the bedding last night when I cleaned the porch so that I could make two beds. So I had to rush off to the feed store and got there just before they closed. After I cleaned up the bed she kidded on... the one with nothing under it... and the spot where she lost blood after the placenta, I gave them more hot water. 3 fillings today! Now I am really tired because I only slept about 2 hours last night :) After I feed Madison I am going to bed! I see why people only do this once a year!
