Pine cedar wood chips

Hi! I was wondering if you can use pine cedar wood chips with goats, instead of hay for the pens? The bags are marked for horses, rabbits etc., but I was just curious.

Thanks,

Tammy

  • Also, I was wondering if you could use wood shavings? It is cheaper in 50 lb. bags. We have been switching the bedding from shavings with straw on top and then clean it everyday. In which, we add more. What do you all think?
  • I use the pine shavings for kidding for the first few weeks, but I noticed that the babies nibble a little on it as well as their Momma's eat a little of it when I first put it down. I like it because its so absorbent to soak up all the pee from during the night. I like to pad the sleeping areas with straw and will switch back to straw when I stop keeping them penned up at night while the babies are little.
I was thinking it had to be okay for nibbling because I know they will strip the bark off a pine branch!

Quite a few people use pine shavings for their goats. We originally did, but once you have more than three or four goats, pine shavings get really expensive. It would take three bags of pine shavings ($15 eight years ago) to bed a stall. It takes only one bale of straw, which is currently $3-4. I know cedar is toxic to some animals, but I doubt it's toxic to goats, because they eat the cedar trees on our property.

  • I did find out that you can use Pine Shavings, however not red cedar because it is toxic.
