Parasites?

Okay so I don't know if it will be too late for anyone to help here but I have a very sick goat. I'm about sure it is parasite. The does eyelids are very light pink, it is lethargic and has the runs. She is about 2-3 years old. We gave her dewormer (safeguard) this morning but she isn't any better this eve. We have been giving her Molly's Herbal dewormer the last several days but it hasn't made much difference either. I called the vet and he said I could bring a fecal sample in but I'm afraid it will be too late by tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

  • Hi Meme

I'm so very sorry that you are dealing with this. I would add a second dewormer class and you want to be sure that you are using the appropriate dosage based on an actual weight of your goat. Since you gave Safeguard, I would also give her Cydectin. If you have been regularly using Safeguard, it may be ineffective due to resistance. Unfortunately, herbal dewormers do nothing to reduce a massive parasite load.

This is a good resource about the different dewormers and their correct dosages. These will be higher than what you see on the bottle.     https://www.vet.cornell.edu/animal-health-diagnostic-center/program...

Since she has diarrhea, be sure that she is drinking plenty of water. I'm not sure where you are located, but if it is hot, dehydration is going to come on super fast. Is she eating anything?

If she is down and/or not eating or drinking, she needs to be seen by a vet so they can get her hydrated and see what her blood counts are.
