Tammy Gallagher replied to Asia's discussion Scurs and Horns with Attitude
"Hi Asia
For the question about scurs- they will likely get knocked off. Sometimes they bleed and sometimes they don't. If they bleed it is usually not nearly as bad as it looks and no intervention is needed. I have noticed with my guys that the more…"

Tammy Gallagher replied to Rebecca Pitts's discussion When to supplement dam fed kids/ Kids grinding teeth
"Hi Rebecca
You may still want to consider bottles for the kids that are really  struggling to keep up with weight gain. Clumpy poop is likely a combination of the increased water intake along with the changes in diet. I would consider adding in a…"

Tammy Gallagher replied to Rebecca Pitts's discussion When to supplement dam fed kids/ Kids grinding teeth
"The great news is that the more you handle them, the less stressful it is for them :) They tolerate being picked up and held much better if they are closer to the ground. So handle them while sitting instead of picking them all the way up to a…"

Tammy Gallagher replied to Rebecca Pitts's discussion When to supplement dam fed kids/ Kids grinding teeth
"Hi Rebecca!
I saw below that Deborah has asked if you notice the teeth grinding associated with anything. We dam raise as well, and this year I have been tracking kid behavior from a development stand point. I have observed that the kids who are…"

Tammy Gallagher replied to Bruce Savage's discussion Selenium with pregnant does
"Hi Bruce!
I personally do not feed my does grain at all during the firs 4 months of gestation. I do start gradually introducing it during the last 3-4 weeks of pregnancy to add some concentrated nutrition in to their system as their rumen begins to…"

Tammy Gallagher replied to Bruce Savage's discussion Opinions on drying up a goat in milk

Tammy Gallagher replied to Bruce Savage's discussion Opinions on drying up a goat in milk
"Hi Bruce. You need to reduce her  "energy" for milk production by gradually weaning her off nutrient dense food such as alfalfa and grain over 1-2 weeks. That snuffs the coals of her milk producing engine :)

"Hello Mary
Are you positive she is pregnant? Ultrasound or blood test confirmed? She does look awfully small to be 2 weeks out, although some can certainly hide kids VERY well. The other thing I noticed is her udder does not seem to be developing…"

Tammy Gallagher replied to Miranda Martin's discussion Milking
"Hi Miranda :)
There is no need to punch the udder. A gentle massage of the lower part of the udder after the first flow has slowed significantly is all that is necessary to encourage hindmilk let down. How much does the 4 week old baby currently…"

  • Hi, Tammy. Good to meet you. My family has a small homestead in the Texas Hill Country and we raise a herd of 4 Nigerian Dwarf, 1 Boer, 1 African Pygmy and 5 Nigora Goats. Four of our does are currently pregnant, three of which are for the first time, and all due this April. We survived the recent snow and are excited for Spring. I am happy to be here with all of you. Thank you for the welcome.
