my doe wont let my buck mount her

Hello,

my first timer Chelsea is 1 1/2 old and this will be her first breeding season. I put her in with my buck yesterday, but she wouldn't let him mount her. She just ran away and headbutted him. I am pretty sure that she was in heat. I am  wondering if someone has any ideas as to what is wrong with her? What should I do about it? Why won't she let him mount her? Also, I put her in with 2 different bucks. One is a rookie and the other, an experienced stud. She wouldn't let EITHER mount her. What's going on? None of my other does have done this..

Thanks

  • Congratulations!
  • Well I have GREAT news!! The doe that was not letting my buck mount her, well she is now 66 days pregnant!! And looking like she has triplets or quads in there!! I was actually too early the first time I put her in with him. So I put him in with her the next day and voila!! Super excited to see what she pops out! Thank you all for the tips... I'll post pictures soon

  • Thanks. This is helpful. I think that she was not in standing heat when I put her in with the buck. She is one of those who is really hard to tell when she is in heat. I think that I missed her standing heat

  • I also find the doe's preference plays a roll too. My first doe I bred absolutely adored  the buck I put her in with. So much so that when she was no longer in heat I couldn't get her to leave, I had to carry her out. But when I bred my other doe to that same buck, She was not so fond of him. I've posted a video of her reaction to the buck. http://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/video/thia-s-first-breeding

In the video she is in standing heat but is unwilling to stand for him until the end of the video.

    Hope this is helpful!

  • Thank you both for the tips. I think that she just started the stages of heat because she tried mounting a couple of my other does today. I'll keep you posted.

  • Ditto on everything Rachel said. If you haven't had this experience before, you've just been really lucky. Even after 12 years and hundreds of does in heat, I don't always know when a doe is in standing heat. Although a doe can be in heat for 24-48 hours, she is in "standing heat" for far fewer hours than that, usually towards the later part of heat.

  • You may have missed her standing heat, or she might only be at the starting stages of heat. If you missed it, she probably won't stand for the boys. Experienced or not. You can try again tomorrow, and see if she will stand for them. Breedings with a doe that isn't in standing heat don't generally take, and the window for that time is about 12-24 hours.
