mucous before kidding

I can't find the discussion where this came up before, but having so many goats kidding in rapid succession this year has been an interesting learning experience, as I've spent far more time in the barn than ever before, because on any given day, there are usually two or three goats that could give birth. I've made an interesting observation that I wanted to share. There is mucous, and then there is MUCOUS! People talk about seeing mucous as a sign of impending labor, and I recently said on some thread that we usually have kids a couple hours after I see mucous. That would actually be the thick, blood-tinged, cloudy mucous that's as thick as your finger. There is also the clear, stringy mucous, which is not nearly as reliable an indicator of eminent labor.

  • When it's a string a few inches long and as thick as your thumb, that's something to pay attention to.

  • Her skin is pink, so it's difficult to see. She was also very uncooperative with me. There was about a dime size of cream colored mucous this morning. Tonight there is none. Her udder is getting some shape, but nothing like the "oh my gosh" that you described in your blog. I am a stay at home mom who homeschools, so I have been keeping a baby monitor on. Looks like this could be a long 3 weeks! I'm glad I know the exact date my next set of does were bred.
    Thank you for your replies.
  • It totally depends on how much. I don't see any in the picture.

My goat is having thick cream colored mucous, but not bloody. Tomorrow is day 147 IF she was bred the first day I put my buck with her. I had him in there for 3 weeks since I was not at the farm every day (my husband was). My other two girls are looking pregnant, but ton nearing the visible signs of getting close.
  • Any input would be appreciated. Think we are getting close?

  • Sorry I've been off-line most of the last two days. Blood-tinged mucous usually means they'll go anywhere between 30 minutes and a few hours.

Ok, well my goat has thin, short, blood tinged mucous.   Does she still have awhile to go then?
  • lol - when that happened to my goat - by 5:15 a.m the next morning - she had 2 almost dry kids.  she had a mucous string - little bloody tinge late afternoon - at midnight she was beginning labor.....  tomorrow i'd say you will have kids. ^^ awesome! good luck!

  • I am wore out! Annie just gave birth to quads a few hours ago -- our sixth set of quads this year! Sherri is going to go soon, and then there will only be Cicada left, and she's already at 145, so by the end of this week, I should be done! We have 49 kids already.
