milking - separate kid or not?

I have a FF, kid is 9 weeks old.  She had twins, but I sold the wether yesterday.  He was getting the lions share of milk also even though I was separating them from Mom at night.  Since I sold him yesterday, and have no other kid to put with her remaining doe - should I still separate her tonight, even though she will be alone?

I tried to milk this evening thinking well, the other kid is gone.  And she was bone dry - well, I did get a few TBL.'s  - ish!  Before the Mom wasnt really letting her nurse, if she tried Mom would move her leg and move around and the doe would go eat hay or nibble grain.

Any ideas?  I think even though this doe's Mom had a huge udder - she not so.  Course, I understand being a FF I shouldnt expect too much.  But I have been separating the kids for 10 or 11 hours and milking and all I am getting is 8 oz.  what's up?  She is getting 1 lb. of grain every day, all the alfalfa she can eat!

  • at bout 9 hours this a.m. I got 1 3/4 c. so by 12 you would probably be right on.  I dont have a dog crate - so she has to be lonely for the sleepy time - they survived it anyway.

You can put the kid in a dog crate next to the dam so she won't be lonely.

If you're only getting eight ounces after 10-11 hours, you're obviously not getting it all because she had to be making at least 32 ounces a day for the kids to thrive, so you should get at least 16 ounces at 12 hours.
