Goats eating mushrooms

Hi Ya'll

I know this may have been discussed before...but I am curious if anyone has had any problems with their goats eating mushrooms?  Where we live there are all types of mushrooms and I am constantly on "Mushroom Patrol" trying to get rid of them.. I haven't had any of my goats really eat any , but I just thought I would ask how others handle this problem..Thanks for any info...

  • We started to get mushrooms 2 years ago. I think the weather conditions have to be just right.  We are in Central Arizona, hot and dry but we do irrigate every 2 weeks during the summer.  The mushrooms we get here are toxic.  They are the  GREEN PARASOL MUSHROOM.  Last year I did loose a very nice doe to one.  I do mushroom patrol just about every 12 hours as soon as I see one pop up.  I do this all September and October.  I went onto the internet and found a local group who did ID the fungus for me.  I do my best to collect the mushrooms before they open and spread their spores and spread.

Good luck with your battle, hopefully you do get them ID'd and they are not toxic.

  • I have seen my goats eat mushrooms a few times.  It was alarming to say the least!  Nothing bad ever happened though.  I don't know what kind they were, but I know they weren't a common edible variety.  My husband is a real forager, and he knows most of the local edible varieties pretty well.  He didn't know that one.  I think it is one I've seen squirrels collecting frequently though.  LOL, not very helpful. :)

  • P.S. I changed the title of the discussion to reflect your question so that it might get more people interested in the discussion, as well as make it easier for people to find it in the future, if they have a similar question.

  • Hasn't happened here, but that's because we don't normally have any mushrooms where the goats live. Sadly we have almost no mushrooms at all, which I find odd, considering how much of our land is wooded. There isn't anything inherently bad about goats eating mushrooms, but if you knew that you had a poisonous variety, I'd certainly try to keep the goats away from it.
